Varnville hosts 'A Night on the Town'

Folks driving through downtown Varnville on Friday evening tended to slow down at the curious sight: young people were singing, stores were open, folks were bundled up and sipping hot cocoa ... something was happening in Varnville.
"A Night on the Town" was put on by the Varnville Community Council in partnership with local business owners. Aiming to show the locals a good time, the event lasted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and featured music, shopping, and an opportunity to socialize with neighbors.
One new resident, Don Gamble, moved here only weeks ago from New Jersey and decided to stop and ask what the after-hours event was about.
"Oh, we're just happy to live here," replied Annette Tuten, Council president. "It's good to get out and see everybody. Cup of cocoa? Coffee?"
As Gamble gave an amiable "I'd like that! Yes, please," another council member began stirring up cocoa and adding a gracious heap of marshmallows. Conversation turned to Forrest Gump (he loves the film and was surprised to hear some scenes were filmed on Main Street), and Gamble smiled and shook his head: "This town is like Mayberry."
Music lovers were pleased to hear the North District Middle School chorus, led by Jamie O'Brien, singing festive tunes in front of Goody's as friends and family looked on. After the concert many among the crowd walked back up Main Street to do some holiday shopping at Moonbeams, where store owner Mandy Strickland welcomed everyone with refreshments and a meet-and-greet with j. mills jewelry designer, Juli Mills.
The quality craftsmanship and attention to detail on each hand-made j. mills piece, along with the remarkable service by Mills herself, seemed to reflect the mission of the Community Council perfectly. Varnville is small but beautiful, and it is the focus on personal connection that truly makes it shine.
