Tuten chosen to be sports ambassador

First Byline:
Kathleen Myers

Wade Hampton freshman Lindsay Tuten is hoping to spend her summer representing Hampton and playing soccer in Europe.
Tuten has been chosen to be a sports ambassador for the organization People to People and is scheduled to play in Austria in July.
"Not many people around here get to do stuff like that," Tuten said. "It's kind of cool I get to represent a small town."
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If Tuten gets to go, she will get to train with Olympic medalists and coaches, including Tiffeny Milbret, a member of the 1996 U.S. Women's National team that won gold at the Atlanta Olympics. She will get to explore the city of Vienna, including visiting a concentration camp and meeting survivors. She is also would have the opportunity to take a biking tour through the city of Vienna.
The cost of the whole trip is $6,000. So far her family has raised $3,000 for her to go to this once in a life-time, life-changing event.
If you ask Tuten why she thinks she was chosen for this honor, you are going to hear a modest response.
"I don't know," said Tuten, who scored 29 goals for the Red Devils this season. "I guess there are a lot of people better than me, but I am kind of good."
Willie Tuten is quick to point out that his daughter wasn't just chosen because of how good she is.
"It's not necessarily how good you can play, but they wanted good athletes to represent good citizens," said Willie Tuten. "They want people to reflect the USA as a good place with good people."
If you ask Lindsey the key to her success, she will tell you it is her dad.
"My dad practices with me everyday," said Tuten, who has been playing soccer since she was 4-years old.
Tuten's mom, Tracy Tuten, is quick to give credit to Lindsay's dad first and all her coaches like Donna Callis, Barry Whittington and Jack Pierson for the success of Lindsay.
Tuten is a little nervous about going to Austria and playing at the Youth Friendship Games in July. Tuten is scheduled to leave July 4-5 and comes back July 13-14.
"I just hope that I do good and don't embarrass myself over there," said Tuten. "I hope America wins. I hope I don't make us lose. I don't want to do anything to embarrass my country."
