The Estill girls basketball team is still riding high and undefeated in Region 5-A after a 54-25 win over Calhoun County last Friday. The Lady Gators (13-5, 6-0) came out strong in the first half creating a 16 point half-time lead.
Playing Calhoun County for the second time this season, Estill had a better idea of what the Saints would do. Earlier in the year the Lady Gators had a 53-47 victory over Calhoun County.
"In the first half we took away their scorer and put pressure on their guards to get out to a nice lead in the third quarter," said coach Cecil Jenkins. "We had a mental breakdown on both ends of the court and allowed Calhoun County to make a brief run at us."
However, the Lady Gators pulled themselves together in the fourth quarter and pulled the victory.
Alyssa Whitney had a big night scoring 24 points and 14 rebounds. Laticia Garvin also was big for the Gators, scoring 10 points.
The Lady Gators will host Bethune-Bowman (1-12, 0-6) on Friday and Allendale-Fairfax (12-3, 6-0.)
"We are headed for a big conference show down," said Jenkins.
