Estill in battle for region crown

When Estill hosts Bethune-Bowman on Friday, the Region 5-A title could be on the line. Both teams are 5-1 in the region, with B-B's only loss coming to Estill earlier in the season.
"Bethune Bowman, they're tough," said Orr. "They're in the hunt and are right behind us in the region. It's a game we have to win. We need to win all our region games to hold onto first place."
Estill's lone region loss was to Calhoun County in December.
The Gators got revenge against the Saints last Friday, with a 66-62 win in the rematch.
The Gators started out strong in the first and second quarter for a 16-point half time lead. But the Saints bounced back in the third, outscoring Estill 21-9.
"They play like true champions," said coach J.J. Orr. "They erased that 16-point half time lead."
Going into the fourth Estill was only up by four points. Both teams scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, but when the dust settled, it was Estill who was the victor.
"The kids persevered and stayed with the game plan," said Orr. "They didn't falter or waiver and played until the end."
Both teams pressed each other in a fast-paced game. The two teams are very similar teams that mirror each other and both are very aggressive and known for putting pressure on the court.
"We wanted it a little more," said Orr of his team. "The kids knew what was at stake."
Lamar Brown and Trenton O'Banner had outstanding nights against Calhoun County scoring 13 points each. Jervony Hutchinson scored 12 points and Shervas Brown scored 10 against the Saints. Louis Williams also scored nine points against Calhoun County.
This win over Calhoun County put Estill (12-6, 5-1) in first place in the region for right now, with the Gators holding the tiebreaker victory over Bethune-Bowman earlier in the season.
Estill was to face Branchville on Tuesday and will host Bethune-Bowman on Friday. After that, the Gators host rival Allendale-Fairfax (2-9, 0-4) on Saturday.
Orr isn't counting out Tigers as a rival and region opponent.
"When it comes to playing a rival game, you can throw the records and the stats out the window," said Orr.
