Devils win state track titles

First Byline:
Kathleen Myers

Wade Hampton brought home two championships from the state track meet in Columbia on Saturday.
Devante Smith was the state champion in the boys 100 meter and Starrcree Mixon took the gold medal in the girls 800 meter race.
"I saw I was the only one crossing the finish line and it was a pleasure," Smith said. "It felt really good. I was amazed. It's an honor to bring back the state title for Wade Hampton. It's something I wanted to do since I started running track. I am going to do it again next year."
The Devils finished third overall in the state with 58 total points, behind Bishop England (80) and Broome (73.) The Wade Hampton girls placed 12th out of 32 teams that competed, with Mixon leading the way.
"It was like, I did it," said Mixon. "I finally won state!"
Mixon says she couldn't have done it without the help of her coaches. And Wade Hampton girls coach Myrriah Hanna is bursting with pride.
"Words can not express how proud I am of Starrcree Mixon," Hanna said. "She has been running since she was in the seventh grade and she finally came in first claiming All State in the 800 meter with a personal all time best of 2:23.04. Her determination and desire to do well pushed her to the end ... She is going to be missed greatly next year."
Demarrio Dobson competed in the 1600 meter run on the state level and placed 7th. It was the first time since 1993 that Estill was represented in the state meet. "I thought I could have won," said a disappointed Dobson. "You just have to take it to another level for that kind of competition.
Estill coach J.C. Threatt is pleased with Dobson and the whole team.
"I am really pleased with Demarrio's effort and dedication this year," said Threatt. "This year he is a junior and he will be returning next year. This experience will be a catalyst for us next year. ..Considering the program has only been established for two year, these kids have done an excellent job."
Wade Hampton boys coach Jim Shuman is really proud of his team and his athletes that competed on the state level.
"With a region championship, lower state runners-up and third place at the state meet, this year's team proved they are a great team," said Shuman. "There are no words to say how proud I am of the boys as individuals and as a team for all they accomplished this year. It was a season to be remembered forever."
The 4x800 relay team of Patrick Magwood, John Callis and Leviticus Williamson took home silver medals, as did Lorenzo Myers (400m hurdles) and Smith (200m.)
Myers also took a bronze in the 100m hurdles. Also finishing third were Jeremy Ford (long jump) and Patrick Magwood (800m).
James Johnson finished fifth in the high jump and Chris Wimberly was sixth in discus.
In addition to Mixon's gold medal, she also took bronze in the 400m. Also competing were Tearra Green (eighth in the 100m) and Tyshaundrea O'Banner (sixth in the 400m hurdles).
