Devils drop season opener by 1

Wade Hampton came within one point of defeating a tough Allendale-Fairfax last Friday, but when the dust settled the Tigers won 21-20.
"They are the No. 7 team in the state for a reason," said Red Devils' coach Jim Shuman.
The Red Devils had a 20-7 lead at halftime, but Wade Hampton had injuries that the Tigers capitalized on.
"They attacked our weak point," said Shuman.
Within the first five plays of the game, the Red Devils lost running back Dondre Brown. They also lost Carl Stevens right before halftime, which hurt them defensively.
"Both have ankle injures and it's hard to say when they'll be back," said Shuman. "It's a day-by-day evaluation."
Shuman says Red Devils fans shouldn't worry.
"We have good quality players," said Shuman. "Players that played back-up positions. We'll be okay. We have good running backs. It won't devastate our season but it will hurt it"
At the start of the fourth quarter the score was 20-14 in the Red Devils' favor.
"We were always in the game," said Shuman. "We were in it to the very end ... It was a good game all around," said Shuman. "Both teams gave it the best they could and poured their heart into it. We unfortunately came one-point short."

The Standouts
Shuman said Nick Williams filled in for Stevens and did a good job despite the fact he is new to football. He also said James Youmans came in and did a great job as running back. Corinthian Williams led in rushing with 73 yards. Quarterback Stevephen Walker went six for nine, threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown. Senior Jerrell Anderson lead in tackles with 11.
"He had the best game of his career by far," said Shuman.
Anthony Davis, a first-year starter, also had a good game with an interception and fumble recovery. Shuman says Jerome Fryar, a running back, and Cory Magwood, a defensive end, also made key contributions.
"Overall as a group, I am very pleased with our defense," said Shuman.
