WHHS beats Bluffton; Gators fall to Blackville-Hilda
The Wade Hampton High School Red Devils traveled to Bluffton Oct. 13 and came home with a win.
The Red Devils of Wade Hampton traveled to Bluffton Friday to swim with the 5-3 (2-1) Dolphins of Bluffton and remained ahead on the scoreboard the entire game. The Red Devils traveled home with a 35-25 victory, putting their season record at an even 4-4 (2-0 region).
Although Head Coach Jerry Brown was not thrilled with the performance of his defense, the team’s offense did see moments of great potential during the game. The Devils’ rookie quarterback connected with receiver Desario Williams for an 89-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.
Continuing to add to his outstanding season milestone of 1,000 yards rushing, Pernell Maxwell III rushed for more than 300 yards against Bluffton. The junior Red Devil is nearing 1,500 yards this season and is ranked as one of the top running backs in the Lowcountry.
“We were fortunate to win, we were ahead the whole game,” said Brown. “We just had to fight for some breaks there at the end.”
The head coach was disappointed, however, with parts of his offense and several touchdowns and big gains that were brought back by penalties. According to the head coach, holding penalties were a major problem plaguing the team last Friday.
“You wouldn’t think that either team knew much defensively, because they were able to move the ball pretty much at will with us,” said Brown. “We had a real hard time stopping the short passes and then gave up one long pass. They had a hard time stopping our running game. There was a lot of offense on the field that night.”
The win at Bluffton was the third in a row for the Devils, who needed to play well during their final two games of the season in preparation for a playoff berth and the advantageous additional home games a granted with a higher seeding.
The Red Devils will be back at home Oct. 20 as they take on the Jaguars of Ridgeland-Hardeeville during a conference matchup.
The 2-6 (2-4 region) Estill Gators fell to Blackville-Hilda 3-5 (2-3 region) by a final score of 26-3 Oct. 13 during a home game.
