I was ashamed.
For once, I am ashamed to be a part of Hampton County.
Monday night, Hampton County had the opportunity to take another step closer to doing something so wonderful for our community that I can't even wrap my mind around it.
I can't even come close to fully imagining how many lives and generations could be uplifted by this project, to be funded by a single penny.
Monday night was scheduled to be the second reading of a one cent Capital Projects Sales Tax ordinance that could improve our local health department, recreation and libraries and even make our jails more secure.
In June, our Watermelon Festival highlighted just how important recreation is to our community, our youth, our future. I said it in an editorial then and I'm saying it again, we need a county-owned recreation complex to bring our children together, give them even more opportunities, and perhaps even boost our local economy.
All of the good things in life were wrapped up right there at our fingertips in this referendum package: better healthcare for our elderly and underprivileged, recreation for our kids, and free literacy for everyone. But it may all be over for now.
Once again, Hampton County folks can't come together at the right place at the right time with the right frame of mind to get something accomplished. That's been the story of Hampton County. That's been our story for far too long.
Our citizens learned a sad lesson Monday night. Our local leaders encourage folks to get involved, come to council meetings, and be a part of the process.
And yet when they come out in force, you tell them it's too late. Too much work has already gone into this to change course now.
And that's not even the worst part. There in the audience, crammed into council chambers, down the hall of the Ben Tillman DeLoach Building, and even outside in the parking lot, were scores of children, anxiously waiting for a decision that would affect their children, their grandchildren.
Unfortunately, they, too, learned something Monday night. Don't get involved in your community, it won't do any good. And your community just doesn't really care about you, after all.
It's time to change the way we do things here in Hampton County and get our priorities straight, or we will never be anything but a backwoods embarrassment that young people will want to leave as soon as they finish high school.
Maybe there's still time. That depends on Hampton County Council. The clock is ticking to get this on the November ballot.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Hampton County needs a county-owned recreation complex. Children from Hampton, and Varnville, and Yemassee, and Estill, and Brunson, all need to come together on that field of dreams. That field may be the start of an even bigger dream for Hampton County.
If we build this complex, maybe we won't need that jail. Maybe, just maybe, one day our young people will want to stay in Hampton County, raise their families, and soon others will want to come and bring jobs and even more opportunities.
We need a county recreation complex. We need to work together.
And I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Hampton County needs to put its children first.

We Are To Blame
Michael, I could not disagree with you more on your analysis of Monday night’s county council meeting. I believe the shame you feel is misdirected and if you must point a finger, then point it at the people of Hampton County. What happened Monday night is typical Hampton County. Wait until after a measure is passed or till the eleventh hour to act interested. I have made my opinion clear; I hope the referendum does not make it to the ballot this year. It is not because I am against children or literacy or healthcare; it’s because I think we are over taxed and we need a little breathing room. But if we do have a referendum in November then projects to be considered should be decided through careful thought and consideration. I agree with the members of council who questioned where all these people have been the past nine months. If they were truly interested in recreation being the top priority and having a recreational facility then their voices should have been heard long ago. I applaud the three members of council who did not allow emotions to cloud their judgment. Since this small group has attempted to hijack the referendum perhaps the best course of action would be to delay putting the measure on the ballot this year. We need to have reasoned debate and discussion and not act based solely on emotion. Filling the council chambers with children might have made a good photo op but when it comes to spending $8 million in taxpayer money I would expect county council to be a little more prudent, deliberative and diligent in their actions.
Really? What does Hampton
Really? What does Hampton have to show off now? a plant that's always changing hands preventing people from getting retirement benefeits, a sawmill that is shut down, hell at the end of August we won't even have a full fledged car dealership in Hampton if what I hear is correct. Can you give me one good reason young people should stay in or around Hampton after graduating? There is absolutely nothing for them here but family and as far as starting families of their own there is very little to offer them to stay here even assuming they can find local jobs to support these families.
We are quickly becoming yet another pit stop between the interstate & Augusta. Drive through our town and see what there is... 2 hotels, eateries, grocery stores, gas stations, mechanics, hardware/parts stores, pharmacies, and a handful of stores ranging from micro dept stores to clothing. With the exception of groceries most of our shopping is done out of town.
Yet everytime someone wants to do something about it they are met with the "if it isn't broke don't fix it" mentality. Well I say they cannot see the forest for the trees... just because it's not in flames and falling apart does not mean it's not broken. Broken is applicable long before cataclysmic failure.
Personally I find everyone responsible for the actions at the meeting... sure it was not the first meeting relating to this issue but the second. Hardly sounds too late to me. Yes, people should have gotten involved sooner but at the same time 4 people on the Council shot down 200+ members of the community and another member of the council on the whim that "it's too late". If it was truly already "too late" they would not have bothered with the meeting on Monday and they sure would not have bothered with the meeting earlier tonight.
Unfortunately I was out of town with my own kids so I was unable to attend tonight's meeting but I'm eagerly awaiting to hear about it. Frankly I think we need some younger people on the council. People that have some new ideas and don't see everyting as "we're just doing ok? well then keep it up."

Hold on Will.....
Hold on Will, go and read the latest story on the blog from the meeting Thursday night (Aug. 5). I think you will be pleased.

I saw that last night just
I saw that last night just as I was going to bed & I am quite pleased. My previous post was more of a rant on Hampton and it's seeming inability to progress in general than anything specific.
I'd still like to see some more specifics before I start dancing though, lol. a "new multi-sport complex" is still a little vague in my eyes. I mean honestly with the exception of basketball, martial arts, gymnastics and dance all other sports I can think of that occur in Hampton are outdoor.
Personally I'd like to get an interest in boxing kicked up in this town though... I'm so tired of hearing about UFC and Mixed Martial Arts every time I turn around
Also Mr Haulsee where can I email you directly? I have the sudden desire to find out some more specific information.
