Hanna Danielle Stanley

VARNVILLE - Miss Hanna Danielle Stanley of Varnville, died Friday afternoon from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Miss Stanley was born in Charleston County, October 21, 1999 a daughter of Emmett Daniel Stanley Jr. (Samantha Roberts) of Varnville and Amber Leigh Blevins (Keith Smyly) of Islandton.  She was a rising sophomore at Wade Hampton High School, where she was a cheerleader and played several sports, soccer being her favorite.


Irene Platts Smith

BRUNSON - Mrs. Irene Platts Smith, widow of William Herbert Smith of Brunson, died Wednesday morning in the Generations of Batesburg Assistant Living Facility.

Mrs. Smith was born in Hampton County, August 29, 1920 a daughter of the late Shellie and Rosa Trowbridge Platts.  She had served as a teacher and director of the kindergarten program at Fairview Presbyterian Church in North Augusta, and was a member of the Brunson United Methodist Church.


Stephen Nicholas Smith

BRUNSON - The Angel of death has visited again and a Godly life ended on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2015, Mr. Stephen Smith was taken from our sight.  We know he is at rest with our Heavenly Father.

Stephen, the son of Fred Joel Smith and Sandy Smith was born January 29, 1996 in Lexington County, SC.  He was a 2014 graduate of Wade Hampton High School.  He was attending OC Tech of Orangeburg studying to become a Registered Nurse.  Stephen was predeceased by his brother Joseph Smith. 


Mother Floria Hills Priester Thompson

VARNVILLE - Mother Floria Hills Priester Thompson, beloved daughter of the late Deacon Tommy Hills and Mrs. Lizzie Dunbar Hills, was born on December 23, 1924 in Hampton County, South Carolina. She received her Savior’s summon to eternal rest on Monday, July 6, 2015.

Former band instructor dies

Robert Stannard, 49, the band director at Guinyard-Butler Middle and Barnwell High schools, died unexpectedly at his home in Hampton over the Fourth of July weekend. He led the Scarlet Knights band the past five years.

“He was one of the most passionate band directors I’ve seen, always wanting the best for the band students,” said Liz Smoak, a band parent and treasurer of the band booster club. “He will be missed by so many of us. Once a Knight, Always a Knight!”


Dorothy Brooks Jones


Dorothy Brooks Jones was born on November 3, 1943 to the late Marion and Maebel Brooks in Allendale County.  Dorothy was the second of eleven children born to the couple.

At an early age, she joined and then was baptized at the Thompson Chapel C.M.E. Church and was very active especially in using her God-given voice to sing.  She later moved her membership to On Time Church House to support her brother in his new ministry.  She loved both ministries with the proof of faithful and devoted service and attendance.

Doris Jane Futch Harvey

HAMPTON - Mrs. Doris Jane Futch Harvey 78 of Holland Street in Hampton died Sunday, June 7, 2015 in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston. 

Mrs. Harvey was born in Brunson January 29, 1937 a daughter of the late William Leslie Futch and Rosalee Crosby Futch.  She had retired from the Allendale County Garment Company and attended the Baptist Church.  She was the widow of Johnny Frank Harvey.

Joe Mike Altman BRUNSON - Mr. Joe Mike Altman, 79, of North Main St. in Brunson, SC died Saturday afternoon March 23, 2013 at the home of his brother in Varnville, SC. Born September 21, 1933 in Hampton County, he was the son of the late William Percy Altman and Pattie Harriott Altman. Mr. Altman served his country in the United States Army and worked as a mechanic from Mikells in Estill, SC. He later retired from the South Carolina Highway Department. He was a member of the Brunson Baptist Church and was married to the late Mamie Ruth Crosby Altman.

A. J. Nix HAMPTON - Mr. AJ Nix, Jr., age 79, loving husband of 58 years to Joan Williams Nix, died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at MUSC in Charleston. Mr. Nix was born in Hampton, SC, on May 7, 1933, to AJ Nix, Sr. and Fannie Pender Nix. He was raised in Hampton and attended Hampton High School. He served his country in the US Air Force and worked at the Savannah River Site prior to opening his businesses with his wife.

David Mew, beloved son of the late Mr. Eddie Mew and the late Mrs. Rebecca Youmans Mew, was born Oct. 5, 1953 in Allendale County. He joined the Miller Swamp Baptist Church at an early age, and attended the schools in Allendale County.
David was an employee of Elliott Sawmill, Estill.
His family will miss his loving and caring ways, but will remember always deep in their hearts.

Harold Douglas Thomas
VARNVILLE - Mr. Harold Douglas Thomas, 76, of Windy Hill Lane in Varnville, SC died Friday morning December 7th, 2012 at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC after an extended illness.
Born February 3rd, 1936 in Jasper County, he was the son of Mrs. Lottie T. Peeples. Mr. Thomas served his country in the United States Army and later retired as a carpenter with Joe Harden Builders in Hilton Head Island, SC. He was a member of Steep Bottom Baptist Church and will be remembered for his love of his grandchildren and fishing.

BRUNSON - Mrs. Kathleen Flagg Reeder, 66, of Tinker Town Road near Brunson, SC went home to be with her Lord late Saturday evening September 15th, 2012 at Roper Hospital in Charleston.
Born May 7th, 1946 in Kearny, NJ she was the daughter of late Jerry Martin Flagg and Mary Riley Flagg. Mrs. Reeder was a homemaker, a member of the Red Hat Society, and a member of the Bellinger Chapel United Methodist Church in Fairfax.
