Ellison Wade DeLoach

VARNVILLE - Mr. Ellison Wade DeLoach, 76, of Two Sisters Ferry Road near Varnville died Friday, January 30, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness.
Born October 14th, 1932 in Hampton County he was the son of the late Ellison Capers DeLoach and Lillie Stanley DeLoach McAlhaney. Mr. DeLoach served his country for 21½ years in the United States Air Force retiring as a Senior Master Sgt. After serving in the military Mr. DeLoach worked for 22 years in the Hampton Post Office as a Postal Clerk and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hampton.

YEMASSEE - Ronald Edwards, 50, husband of Annette "Libby" Edwards of the Pocotaligo community of Yemassee, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in the Medical University Hospital, Charleston.

Gladys Mixson Vanderpool

HANAHAN - Gladys Mixson Vanderpool, 82, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at Roper Hospital.

Mrs. Vanderpool was born December 1, 1926 in Varnville. She was a daughter of the late Lewis and Lena Mixson. She was a retired employee of the Navy Exchange. She was a charter member of Park Circle Baptist Church, now known as Portside Baptist Church in North Charleston.

Ethel Ward “Bobbie” Goettee

ATLANTA, GA. - Mrs. Ethel Ward "Bobbie" Goettee, formerly of Estill, died Thursday, January 08, 2009 in Atlanta, GA after an extended illness.

Born Feb. 2, 1933 in Savannah, GA, she was the daughter of the late Milton Eugene Ward and Ethel Mae Worley Ward. Mrs. Goettee grew up in Estill, attended the Estill schools and then entered the Univesity of South Carolina where she earned a BS Degree in Education and later moved to Atlanta, GA, She was a homemaker and was a member of Briarcliff United Methodist Church in Atlanta, GA.

Evadna Mae Fennell Peeples

HAMPTON - Mrs. Evadna Mae Fennell Peeples, 93, of Co Op Road died Friday, January 9, 2009 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville.

Born August 24, 1915 in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Albert Hardcastle Fennell and Vinnie Lou Pulaski Fennell. She was a homemaker and a member of the Hampton Primitive Baptist Church.

She was married to the late Miles Edgar Peeples, Sr.

Doris L. Keller

Doris L. Keller, 77, of Reading, PA, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 in the Reading Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren R. Keller, who died on April
28, 1997.
Born in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Clevie C. and Polly (Connely) Shaffer. She worked for many years as a private house cleaner until retiring in 2008. Doris was a member of Mohrsville Church of the Brethren of Mohrsville, PA.

Surviving are: One son: Charles R. Keller, of Reading, Pa.; two brothers:
Ralph H. Shaffer of Hampton; and Ray S. Shaffer, San Bernardino,

Elizabeth “Betty” Smith Bowers Altman

Elizabeth "Betty" Smith

HAMPTON - Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Smith Bowers Altman, 85, of Jackson Avenue died Saturday, January 10, 2009 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extednded illness.

Born June 20, 1923 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Hattie Smith. Mrs. Altman loved to spend time with her family and she also enjoyed the art of embroidery. She was married to the late David Asberry "Berry" Bowers.

Rudolph Gooding

Mr. Rudolph Gooding, 87, of Main Street in Varnville died Monday morning, Jan. 12, 2009 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville.

Born April 16, 1921 in Miley, he was the son of the late William Hard Gooding and Mabel Cook Gooding. After serving his country in the United States Army during World War II, he became an insurance agent and later a District Manager, retiring from Liberty Life Insurance Company. He had served on the Varnville Town Council for 20 years and was a member of the Varnville Christian Church where he was a Deacon and Elder.

Mary Etta Tuten Mixson

BRUNSON - Mrs. Mary Etta Tuten Mixson, 84, of Russell Road, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 in the Heritage Healthcare of the Lowcountry.

Born June 24, 1924 in Hampton, she was the daughter of the late Monnie Tuten and Lydia Sinclair Tuten. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church where she was active with the TEL Sunday School Class. She was married to the late Clark Mixson.

Ethel Ann Loadholt Robinson

LENA - Ethel Ann Loadholt Robinson, 56, of 72 Plum Tree Road, died Friday evening, January 9, 2009 at her residence in Lena. Mrs. Robinson was born on December 29, 1952 in Hampton County to the late Mr. Hector and Mrs. Mae Bell Loadholt. She was educated by the public school system of Hampton County, and was a 1970 graduate of the former Estill Training School.

HAMPTON - Mrs. Ann Manuel Thomas, 96 plus years of age, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Lexington Medical Center Extended Care Facility in Lexington, after an extended illness.

Dr. Rahn made his comments during a regular report to the Board of Regents on the progress of expanding medical education in Georgia. He argued that remaining focused on the benefits to human health would move the discussion beyond the nuts and bolts, such as developing a curriculum, of putting together a branch campus in Athens.

"We've got to get above the mundane issues," Dr. Rahn said. "We have to attend to those issues. ... But we've got to keep this higher purpose in mind as we're doing that."
