William Dee Chisolm, Jr.

CAYCE - Mr. William Dee Chisolm, Jr., 76, passed away Friday, October 30, 2015, at home where his loving family supported him during his five year battle with cancer.  He was a son of William Dee Chisolm, Sr., and Lilah Elaine Peeples Chisolm.


Father Carl E. Bauer

HAMPTON - Father Carl E. Bauer of Hampton died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015 in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. 

He was born July 11, 1937 the son of Carl E. and Virginia Naegele Bauer.  Father Bauer was preceded in death by both his parents, as well as two sisters, Virginia Bauer Ebbert and Mary Elizabeth Bauer.  He is survived by nieces, Virginia Ebbert and Bridget Ebbert Jordan, and nephew James Ebbert; as well as Jeanne Howell, longtime friend and associate in ministry.

VARNVILLE - Reverend Robert Andrew Johnson, the son of Andrew Johnson and the late Lorine Priester Johnson was born on February 09, 1945, in Hampton County, South Carolina. On October 14, 2015, he entered into eternal rest at his home in Varnville, South Carolina.


Major James Edward Bolton

HAMPTON - Major James Edward Bolton, known to everyone as “Blue”, 64, of Hampton, passed away Friday, October 9, 2015 at his residence.

Funeral services were held 11 am, Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at Open Arms Fellowship, Hampton, South Carolina with interment in Sandy Run Cemetery.

BRADFORD, PA - Bonnie K. Matie, 66, of Bradford, PA passed away after a long illness in the presence of her family on October 3, 2015 at 9:03AM.

She was born in Bradford on July 15, 1949 to Maxine Cox and Elmer Mott.  She was the manager of the Texamart  (now the Shell gas station) in Hampton, SC  from 1987 to 1995.  She was married to Gary Matie on September 23, 1978 giving them 37 glorious years together.


Deacon Joe Grant, Jr.

VARNVILLE - An earthly life of commitment, diligence and service to God ended on Monday night, September 28, 2015. God’s servant, Deacon Joe Grant, Jr., was called from toils to reward at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, South Carolina.

Deacon Joe Grant, Jr., a son of the late Mr. Joe Breland Grant, Sr. and Mrs. Pearl Davis Grant, was born December 29, 1949 in Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. He was the youngest of ten siblings.


Carolyn Ann Hutto Stanley

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Carolyn Ann Hutto Stanley of Sparrow Road in Varnville, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015 evening in the Medical University Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Stanley was born in Bamberg County, January 12, 1958 a daughter of the late Henry and Lila Eudelle Bazzle Sr.  She was a homemaker and had attended Open Arms Christian Fellowship Church.


Justin Keith Nettles

VARNVILLE - Mr. Justin Keith Nettles, 26, of Varnville, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015.

Funeral services were held 3 pm, Thursday, September 10, 2015 at First Christian Church, 400 West Holly Street, Hampton.  Burial was in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Pocotaligo Road, Varnville.


George Edward Mock, III

HILTON HEAD - Mr. George Edward Mock, III of Hilton Head, formerly of Hampton, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2015 in the Hilton Head Regional Hospital.

Mr. Mock was born in Portsmouth, Virginia January 13, 1950, a son of the late George Edward Mock, II and Gladys Louise Cook Mock Jaudon.  He worked as a welder in the construction business, and attended the Red Dam Baptist Church in Hardeeville.  He was an Army Veteran and served in Vietnam.

HAMPTON - Mrs. Dorothy Louise Harvey Mitchum of the Crocketville Community near Hampton, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015 in the Agape Hospice Hospital in Columbia.


Vernell Ellen Walsh Sinclair

VARNVILLE - Mrs. Vernell Ellen Walsh Sinclair of Third Street in Varnville, passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2015 at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Sinclair was born on Sapelo Island, Georgia, a daughter of the late William Herman Anderson and Carrie Shipes Anderson.  She had worked with Gooding Contractors in Hampton as their head bookkeeper, and was a member of the Hampton 1st Christian Church.  She was a 1959 Wade Hampton Graduate.

PINELAND - Ms. Virginia Ann Garvin, 55, was called from earthly toils by her Maker on Monday, July 27, 2015 while at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, South Carolina. She was born October 8, 1959, the ninth and last sibling of Mrs. Charlotte Virginia DeLoach-Garvin and the late Mr. Aaron Garvin, Sr. Born in Pueblo, Colorado, she lived all of her life in Pueblo before moving to South Carolina two years ago.

Hanna Danielle Stanley

VARNVILLE - Miss Hanna Danielle Stanley of Varnville, died Friday afternoon from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Miss Stanley was born in Charleston County, October 21, 1999 a daughter of Emmett Daniel Stanley Jr. (Samantha Roberts) of Varnville and Amber Leigh Blevins (Keith Smyly) of Islandton.  She was a rising sophomore at Wade Hampton High School, where she was a cheerleader and played several sports, soccer being her favorite.


Irene Platts Smith

BRUNSON - Mrs. Irene Platts Smith, widow of William Herbert Smith of Brunson, died Wednesday morning in the Generations of Batesburg Assistant Living Facility.

Mrs. Smith was born in Hampton County, August 29, 1920 a daughter of the late Shellie and Rosa Trowbridge Platts.  She had served as a teacher and director of the kindergarten program at Fairview Presbyterian Church in North Augusta, and was a member of the Brunson United Methodist Church.


Stephen Nicholas Smith

BRUNSON - The Angel of death has visited again and a Godly life ended on Wednesday morning, July 8, 2015, Mr. Stephen Smith was taken from our sight.  We know he is at rest with our Heavenly Father.

Stephen, the son of Fred Joel Smith and Sandy Smith was born January 29, 1996 in Lexington County, SC.  He was a 2014 graduate of Wade Hampton High School.  He was attending OC Tech of Orangeburg studying to become a Registered Nurse.  Stephen was predeceased by his brother Joseph Smith.

VARNVILLE - Mother Floria Hills Priester Thompson, beloved daughter of the late Deacon Tommy Hills and Mrs. Lizzie Dunbar Hills, was born on December 23, 1924 in Hampton County, South Carolina. She received her Savior’s summon to eternal rest on Monday, July 6, 2015.

Former band instructor dies

Robert Stannard, 49, the band director at Guinyard-Butler Middle and Barnwell High schools, died unexpectedly at his home in Hampton over the Fourth of July weekend. He led the Scarlet Knights band the past five years.

“He was one of the most passionate band directors I’ve seen, always wanting the best for the band students,” said Liz Smoak, a band parent and treasurer of the band booster club. “He will be missed by so many of us. Once a Knight, Always a Knight!”


Dorothy Brooks Jones


Dorothy Brooks Jones was born on November 3, 1943 to the late Marion and Maebel Brooks in Allendale County.  Dorothy was the second of eleven children born to the couple.

At an early age, she joined and then was baptized at the Thompson Chapel C.M.E. Church and was very active especially in using her God-given voice to sing.  She later moved her membership to On Time Church House to support her brother in his new ministry.  She loved both ministries with the proof of faithful and devoted service and attendance.
