Earlene Modestine Duncan

GIFFORD - Earlene Modestine Duncan, 92, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 at the Ridgeland Nursing Home.
Mrs. Duncan was born in Darlington County on Aug. 9, 1918. She was a daughter of the late Mattie and Fred Lowry. She graduated in 1939 from Brockington High School and later attended Morris College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1943. Throughout her adult life, Mrs. Duncan always appreciated the avail of an education; steadily completing graduate work at South Carolina State University. She married to Oliver Duncan on May 19, 1949. They were blessed with three children, Lazetta Y. Duncan, Matterfices E. Duncan and the late Polynices H. Duncan. Mrs. Duncan worked as an educator throughout the counties of Sumter, Jasper, Hampton and Darlington for a total of 45 years before retiring from the school system. She was blessed to travel most of the country and vacationed abroad in Paris, France. She was an active member of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter #223 and the Untied Order of Tents.
Mrs. Duncan was preceded in death by her son, Polynices H. Duncan, siblings Ulysses Lowry, Lenora Hutchinson, Marhsall Lowry, Elizabeth Lowry, and Freddie Lowry.
Surviving are: Her husband, Oliver Duncan of Gifford; one daughter, Lazetta Duncan-Moore (George) of Freeport, N.Y.; Matterfices Duncan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren, LaPrena Harrison (Rodney) of Baldwin, N.Y.; LaNora Moore and George Moore of Freeport, N.Y.; four great grandchildren, amber Harrison, Tyra Harrison, Kaia Harrison, all of Baldwin, N.Y.; Nathaniel Moore of Freeport, N.Y.; one sister, Hazel Lowry of Timmonsville; one brother, King David Lowry (Dorthy) of Timmonsville; in-laws, Josephine Lewis of Savannah, Ga.; Shirley Ann of Philadelphia, Pa.; Rose (Itta) Duncan of Estill; Geneva Duncan of Estill; Maybank Duncan (Bertha) of Estill; Marvin Kingwood of Brooklyn, N.Y.; devoted nieces, Soletta Taylor of Gifford; Alfreda Gordon of Estill; nephew, William Lowry (Rose); a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, and the Clifton Baptist Church family.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29 in the Hampton District Two Auditorium in Estill with burial in the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort.
Martin Funeral Home of Estill was in charge of the arrangements.
