Walterboro, S.C. – Mary Elizabeth “Libba” Flowers, wife of Dr. Joseph Flowers, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was 80.
Mrs. Flowers was born Feb. 27, 1937, in Brunson, S.C., a daughter of the late Julius “Jack” and Esther Hiers. She was a member of the first graduating class of Wade Hampton High School, and was a graduate of Columbia College. She taught in both public and private schools in Richland County, Hampton County and Colleton County. She was the 1954 Watermelon Festival Queen, and was a member of the Mayfield Terrace Garden Club, the Women’s Medical Auxiliary, was president of the John C. Calhoun Academy Bank Booster Club, and was on the Elaine Fogle Scholarship Committee.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Stephany Bates (Bob) of Edisto Beach, Cal Griffin (Prissy) and Jill Burttram (Tracy) of Walterboro, Cindy Cox (Don) of Bluffton, Joe Flowers, Jr. (Michelle) and Dianne Flowers (Tom), of Hilton Head, and Elaine Flowers (Ernie) of Cummings, G.A. There are 14 grandchildren: Kadee Sloan, Ryan Brandon and Phillip Muth, Jennings; Olivia and Jake Burttram; Callie, Gracie and Clay Griffin; Brice, Payton and Reagan Flowers; and Brandon Cox.
The family wishes to thank her special caregivers: Becky Linder Hart, Brittney Melton and Sara Scriven.
The family received friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. and Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Aug. 19, 2017, in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro. Interment followed in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, to Colleton Preparatory Academy, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Allendale, S.C. - Mark Warren White, son of Martha White and the late Tom C. White, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017. He was born Apr. 9, 1961, in Spartanburg, SC and spent most of his life in Allendale. He has two sisters: Eunice Horne (David) of Estill, SC and Esther Wilson (John) of Spanish Fort, AL; two nieces: Alexandria Wilson and Claire Wilson, and one nephew, Jack Wilson. Mark graduated from USC Salkehatchie with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.
Mark liked to travel and write poetry. He had a passion for books and accumulated a large assortment on various subjects. He enjoyed painting, reading and collecting tools and various antique objects.
Memorial Services were held at the Allendale First Baptist Church, Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. The family received friends in the sanctuary prior to the service from 1:00 until 1:50 p.m.
