Rudolph “Rudy” Owens Lightsey, 70, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.

Mr. Lightsey was a native of Fairfax, SC and a son of the late Roy H. and Grace Evelyn Brant Lightsey and was a member of Mt. Arnon Baptist Church.

He was retired from the SC Dept. of Education and was now employed at the Chatham County GA. Dept. of Education. Rudy had a lifelong love for cars, he fueled this passion by building, racing, selling, trading and restoring them. He was also an avid golfer but most of all he loved his family.

Mrs. Myrtice Beatrice Rowe Fenn of Varnville died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston.

Mrs. Fenn was born in Savannah, August 25, 1939 a daughter of the late Joseph Rounder Rowe Sr. and Beatrice Sutton Rowe. She had been a nurse for 50 years, and was a member of the Varnville First Baptist Church.

Thomas William “Billy” Cone passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2016, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Billy was born in Brunson, on Nov. 6, 1923. He was the son of the late George Edward Cone and Inez Ginn Cone. He graduated from Brunson High School and attended the University of Georgia. Billy served in the Army overseas in the European Theater.

Mr. Charles Thomas “Tommy” Gatch passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016. Born in Ridgeland, SC, he was the only child of the late Raymond Frederick Gatch and Thelma Hunt Gatch. Tommy was the husband of 53 years to the late Harriet Louise Price Gatch. He was a devoted and active member of Bethel Baptist Church and served as a former Deacon. Mr. Gatch began his career with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health as Farm Supervisor. While working full time and raising a family, he attended and graduated from USC with both his BS and Masters Degrees.

William “Winkey” Malphrus, Sr., 80, of Hampton; formerly of Ridgeland passed away Tues., Sept. 13, 2016, at his home surrounded by family and friends.

Winkey was born October 26, 1935, to Bill and Oneida Malphrus. He was a Christian who enjoyed playing music and singing in church and to the elderly at the Estill Nursing Home. He was a faithful member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Hampton.

He retired from EM Industries in 2001 after 25 years. There he made numerous friends. He played on the company softball and bowling leagues.

Mrs. Patricia Gail Ashley Padgett of Wagon Wheel Road near Hampton died peacefully Wednesday morning at her residence.

Mrs. Padgett was born in Beaufort, August 25, 1955 a daughter of the late James Preston and Elsie Saxon Ashley. She was a homemaker, a member of the Hampton County Library Board, and also served on the Allendale Hampton Jasper Regional Library Board. She was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church where she was a past member of the Ladies Club and the Choir.

Mrs. Carolyn Dobson Clapp of Pocotaligo Road near Hampton died Monday in the Trident Hospital in Charleston. She was the widow of Marshall L. Clapp.

Mrs. Clapp was born in Hampton County, November 12, 1941 a daughter of the late John and Edith Belger Dobson. She had retired from Nevamar in Hampton with the accounting department, was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Hampton and Varnville Book Club. She was member of the Hampton First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in many church activities.

Mrs. Desser Lee Gooding of Hampton died Monday afternoon in Bamberg after an extended illness.

Mrs. Gooding was born in Hampton County February 8, 1941 a daughter of the late Alfred Gooding and Iva Lee Crosby Gooding Henry.  She was a retired seamstress and waitress in the Hampton County community.

Surviving are: Daughter: Judy Ann Ellis of Charleston; Sisters: Mary Linder of Charleston and Betty Champion.  There are 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Gooding was predeceased by two children: Felinda Kaye Thompson and Paul Allen Stanley.

Genevieve Marcella Preston, 96, passed away July 4, 2016. She was born in Canton, PA on March 4, 1920 to Albert and Edna Krise. She lived a full life in Williamsport, PA, Lakeland, FL and most recently, Brunson, SC.

 Mrs. Genevieve Preston joins her husband Clarence R. Preston and daughter Cheryl S. Patterson in heaven. She is survived by sons Larry D. Preston, Mulberry, FL; Robert A. Preston, Brunson, SC; and James D. Preston, Williamsport, PA; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
