Bertie Mae Ruth

Mother Bertie Mae Ruth, 84, of 300 Chocolate City Road, Nixville, SC was born in Hampton County, SC, October 17, 1933 to the late William Newton and Patience Duncan.  She was an active member of Efferson Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her demise.

Mother Bertie Mae was full of love, and laughter. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, vegetable garden, fishing, shopping, riding her bicycle, and walking up and down Chocolate City Road. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and attending church.

Mother Bertie Mae was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Franklin Ruth Sr., this union was blessed with nine children, one son preceded them in death.
As she enters the pearly gates, she is greeted by her parents, husband, one son, Willie James Ruth, siblings, Julia Mae O'Banner, Ella Bell Moore, Lena Bryson, Rose Ella Green, Grena Evans, Arthur Lee, Herman O'Banner and Eddie Jiles along with three grandchildren.
On Monday, October 30, 2017, Mother Bertie Mae gained her Golden Crown from earth to eternity in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family as she took flight to be with the Lord.
Cherishing her love and fond memories are: Six sons, Johnny (Patricia) Ruth, Franklin Ruth Jr., Deacon Carl Ruth, all of Nixville, SC, Leroy (Tara) Ruth, Walterboro, SC, Michael (Sophia) Ruth, Hilton Head, SC, Clarence (Shay) Ruth,Ocala, Florida, Two daughters; Mary (Leon) Driessen, Hilton Head, SC, Pastor Marshell (Leanthony) Smith, Hampton, SC; Three step-daughters, Francina Hopkins, Lexington, SC, Penny (Ben) Holmes, Patricia Comier, both of Hampton, SC; Four sisters, Patricia Chamber, Ethel Bell Doctor, both of Greenville, SC, Margaret Newton, Washington, DC, Lizer Thompson, Cummings, SC; Two brothers, Ricky, and Billy Ferguson both of Greenville, SC, one brother in law, Jack Ruth, Varnville, SC. (48) grandchildren, (73) great grandchildren, (5) great-great grandchildren, Six aunts, Mary Ann Johnson, Evelyn Johnson both of Luray, SC, Cora Lee Jones, Rebecca Johnson both of Savannah, Georgia, Cora Swinton, Walterboro, SC and Julius (Nathaniel) Overstreet, New York, one uncle, Starr Johnson, Savannah, Georgia. Two special friends, Connie Wooten, Nixville, SC, Claudie Mae Greene, Cummings, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.

Home Going Service was held 1 P.M. Friday, November 3, 2017 at Efferson Missionary Baptist Church, 5146 Browning Gate Road, Estill, SC, Reverend Dr. Hallie Capers, Pastor and Eulogy, Elder Patricia Brantley, Presiding. Interment was in the Cypress Creek Cemetery, Pineland, SC.

Gladys Holmes Green

ESTILL - Gladys Holmes Green 62, of Estill, SC, wife of Minister Christopher Green, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Wake services will be held 6 to 7 PM, Thursday, Dec. 7,  2017 at New Abundant Life Church of God in Christ, Foster Road, Varnville,, SC

Funeral services will be held 12 Noon, Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at Burton New Church of Christ in Burton, SC.  Burial will follow in Sixteen Gates Cemetery, Beaufort.

Kenneth Wayne Eckler

EARLY BRANCH - Mr. Kenneth Wayne Eckler, 56, of Gilkerson Lane near Early Branch, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 in Beaufort County.

Mr. Eckler was born in North Carolina, March 23, 1961, a son of the late Norman and Catherine Burnt Eckler.  He was a Diesel Mechanic and worked with Certified Fleet Services in Beaufort County.

Surviving are:  One daughter:  Patrisha Gonzalez of Islandton; Sister:  Anita Humphries of Burton;  and two grandchildren:  Jadyn and Adryanna Gonzalez of Islandton. 

Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 1, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Benjamin Martin Heape

BRUNSON - Mr. Benjamin Martin Heape, 74, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2017 at his residence near Brunson.

Mr. Heape was born in Cummings, June 28, 1943, a son of the late Charlie Wilson and Luelle Cook Heape.  He retired from Westinghouse Corporation in Hampton as a Press Operator after 43 years of service.  He was a member of the Evergreen Masonic Lodge and the Jahab Shrine Club.  He was married to the late Jan Valentine Heape.

Surviving are:  One daughter:  Sonja Heape of Brunson; Sister:  Margie Woods of Gillisonville; Grandchildren:  Josh Moseley and Tristan Shinholser; and one great-grandchild:  Joshua Dylan Moseley, Jr.  Mr. Heape was predeceased by two brothers:  Jack and Charlie O’Neal Heape.

Funeral services were held 4 P.M. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home located at 300 Mulberry Street West in Hampton.

Wallace Gilbert Harriott

PINELAND - Mr. Wallace Gilbert Harriott, 70, of Gillison Branch Road in Pineland, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Harriott was born in Hampton, February 28, 1947, a son of the late Frank and Effie DeWitt Harriott.  He was a retired truck driver, having worked with both Luray Grain Company and J.F. Wyman Grain Company.  He had attended the St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church and was a former member of the Stafford Masonic Lodge # 216.

Surviving are:  His wife:  Mrs. Idell Prince Harriott of Pineland;  Sons:  Danny Brunson and wife Gail of Scotia, and Michael Harriott of Varnville;  Daughter:  Judy Rivers and husband Don of Nixville;  Brother:  John Albert Harriott, Sr. and wife Shelby of Burgaw, N.C.; Sister:  Marselle Staton and husband Jim of Middletown, Ohio; Grandchildren:  Bonnie Lee and husband Randy, Alan Brunson and wife Cassie, Kurt Rivers and wife Odessa, Mandy Harriott “Noel”, and Dusty Harriott and wife Gabi.  There are 10 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Harriott was predeceased by brothers and a sister:  Charles, Eric, Nathan, Quillie Joe Harriott and Edith Hodges.

Graveside services were held at 1 P.M. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017 in the Lebanon Cemetery near Scotia conducted by Rev. John Harriott, Jr.

Vernelle Crapse Gibson

HAMPTON - Mrs. Vernelle Crapse Gibson, 87, of Luray Highway near Hampton, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at her residence.

Mrs. Gibson was born in Varnville, November 30, 1930, a daughter of the late Brooks and Iona Murdaugh Crapse.  She had worked at the Allendale Garment Company and the Gemco Manufacturing Company in Varnville where she retired as a Supervisor.  She was an active member of the Jahab Honeys at the Jahab Shrine Club and was a member of the Hampton First Christian Church.  She was the widow of Marion Peeples and Lloyd J. Gibson, Jr.

Surviving are:  Sons:  Billy Peeples and wife Sandy of Greensboro, North Carolina, Russell Gibson of Hampton, and Dana Gibson and wife Dawn of Hampton;  Daughters:  Wanda Atkinson and husband Don of Hampton, and Jodi Gambill Dennie and husband Steve of Dallas, Texas;  Sister:  Martha “Sissy” Forrester of Summerville; Sister-in-law:  Dorothy Crapse of Beaufort;  Grandchildren:  Roe, Shaun, Jaret and Will Gibson, Nicole Grossie, Brooke Shaffer Price, Tara Peeples, Chris Atkinson and Tammy Foster;  and 12 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Gibson was predeceased by:  Brothers:  Murdaugh Crapse and Marvin Crapse; and Sisters:  Lillian McGraw, Mazie Long and Clara Mae Mason.

Funeral services were held 3 P.M. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017  in the Hampton First Christian Church conducted by Rev. Larry Smith and Rev. Thom Jackson with burial in the Hampton Cemetery.
