Two juveniles taken into custody after bomb threat

First Byline:
Michael M. DeWitt, Jr., Editor

UPDATE: Varnville Police Chief Tyrone Smith told The Guardian around 10:45 a.m. Thursday that two juveniles have been taken into custody in connection with Wednesday's bomb threat at Wade Hampton High School, and are presently being transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

UPDATE: A reported bomb threat at Wade Hampton High School early Wednesday morning appears to have been another hoax that disrupted the school day. The threat came in at 7:32 a.m., said Chief Smith, and after evacuating the building and searching for explosives, no bomb was found and the scene was cleared. Firefighters began clearing up around 10:30 a.m., with law enforcement officials remaining briefly on the scene after that.

UPDATE: As of 10:05 a.m. emergency officials were still on the scene of the reported bomb threat at Wade Hampton. Officers at the scene reported finding no bomb at that time but the investigation continued.

The bomb threat was reportedly called in before 9 a.m. and students were evacuated from the building. Officers from the Hampton County Sheriff's Office, the Varnville Police Department, and the Hampton Police Department, along with EMS and the Varnville Fire Department, were stationed at and near the high school. Nearby roads were briefly blocked.

There is typically at least one hoax bomb threat at WHHS each school year, but officials handle each report seriously. More information will be posted if needed.

Where Is The Truth

I am confused.  I read on here about a bomb threat at Wade Hampton.  But I receive two phone calls from the principal this morning saying a different story.   He said there was a emergency drill and all students was participating.  He then call back and say the drill was a sucess.  I think they be a big diference between a drill and  a bomb threat.  If school folks are not honest about this...what else are they not honest about?

SAME MESSAGE

I sense something fishy here also. I have a friend who is a parent of a student at the high school who also received the same messages(there will be a routine drill followed by the drill is complete and students are returning back to class)..........Now either someone is lying or the whole truth is not being told here.  There are some questions looming that desire to be answered. Also since when has the track field or the football field become "safe zones" in the event of a bomb threat?

Were you fans of Wikileaks too?

Let's see a bomb threat is called in and the princiPAL says that nothing's wrong just a routine thing to keep everyone calm.  OR he says that there is a bomb in the school and envokes chaos......  I say he made a good call to get everyone safely out and not cause panic in Hampton.

Are You Crazy

Chuckie, you need to chill.
First off the principals biggest mistake was to use his new play toy to
lie to the public.  What a waste of
taxpayer money.  Do you  really think the public did not have the 411
already?  It made him look like a
complete idiot to say it was a drill and that it was successful when in fact it
was a bomb threat.  If he cannot be
honest about this, than can you really trust him to be honest in other
matters?  Next thing you know he will be
changing grades on tests and report cards.
Now there is a story for you.  Wade
Hampton may not be Denmark, but it sho nuff smells like it.

And Chuckie my personal business is none of your
business.  If my wiki leaks thats between
me and my doctor.

Change Grades?

Change grades?  I have no further comments.......

I think we agree......

Chucktown, I think we agree on this. Midnight needs to remember one thing.........if the principal did do this then it can be considered a mistake in judgement.......changing grades is much more serious........it would not only mean that a conspiracy was committed, it would also be a criminal act!

I agree with chucktowndcroz 1/30/12

For the safety of the students, parents, and citizens, I think the principal made the right call in referring to the bomb threat as a drill. I hate to think what chaos would have been created if it was known there was a bomb threat.  Now, some other bloggers have gone from a drill, to bomb threat to CHANGING GRADES.  What kind of thought process is this!!!!!  Years ago it was said, "Don't criticize, abuse or accuse until you have walked a mile in my shoes."

Sorry if anybody took offense

My point was trust is important.  I have been living hear only a couple of years and it seems this place is no different from where I come from.  Government officials will tell you only what they want you to know and will do what works for them.  Look at what happen to Coach Steve.  Does anybody really think we is getting the straight story on that.  As far as grades I am telling you what a Wade Hampton teacher told me and he said the principal said it in a meeting.  So if you know a teacher ask them. I kinda know how the newspaper man feels now.  Tell the truth and people who do not like it get all in your face.  Like he say it is okay to report the  bad stuff about someone as long as they are not my family or friends.

Not all are that way......

Speaking as an elected government offical (Hampton Co. Council) I can tell you that if anyone asks me about what is going on in the community, that has to relate to county business, I have no problem with answering their questions as thoroughly and as honestly as possible. If I don't knoiw the answer I will find out the answer and get back to that person. When you say "Government officials will tell you only what they want you to know" you are insinuating that we are all that way. That is not true. I think that I can speak for all of the members of Hampton County Council when I say that we are all honest people that have the county's best interest at heart. You may not agree with everything we say or do but when we do make a decision we have all of the specifics. Again.....we do care and we do want to see our community grow and prosper and are trying to make those things happen to the best of our ability. The citizens of Hampton County voted for us to do just that and to make these decisions for the citizens. Not as a Council member but as a citizen of this community I will say this. Again you make unfounded accusations and offer rumors by anonymous people ("As far as grades, I am telling you what a Wade Hampton teacher told me and he said the principal said it in a meeting") as your evidence. This is where "Achem's razor" applies. To simplify.....if it looks like bullsh**, and smells like bullsh**, then it probably is bullsh**. Do you really think the principal would discuss grade changing in a "meeting". Again you are suggesting a schoolwide conspiracy, a huge criminal act if executed. Don't you think there are teachers in that "meeting" that would be opposed to grade changing and would let the proverbial "cat out of the bag" if they were opposed to it. You, yourself are accusing government officials of doing exactly what you are doing.....making it up as you go along.

Agree

Well said Chris.

This is in reference to Chris Haulsee comment

I certainly did not vote for you or anyone else on the county council.I voted to replace everyone that continues to keep this county from growing. You said and I quote:

You: Speaking as an elected government offical (Hampton Co. If all of you are so honest and want the county to grow so much then why do you continue to stop big business from coming here like Walmart or more decent restaurants. In my opinion about the school situation of the principle not telling the truth about the bomb threat does he expect the students to take the next situation that he calls them to do as being a honest gesture on his part or will they think he is just sugar coating the situation again. If you know anything at all about kids you should know honesty is the best policy.

I as a highly charged taxpayer in this county will continue to try and vote all of you out until we get someone who really wants our county to grow and let in big business. If you took a survey I would bet my money on that the majority of our county goes outside of it to spend the majority of our money.

Please explain to me.....

You certainly have the right to vote for who you want and if you don't feel that I have done a good job then I suggest you do vote for someone who you think will do a better job. As for "keeping big business from coming here or more decent restaurants", can you please tell me how I kept that from happening. It was always that my understanding that Walmart didn't come here (and that was before I was ever on County Council) because of the "venue law" and the amount of frivolous lawsuits that at one time took place in our county because of said law. A law that, by the way, that could not be changed by a county ordinance but only by state legislation. If you would like to blame me for this that is fine but keep in mind I ran the Watermelon Festival for five years during which time we started broadcasting the parade on regional television to attract tourism and businesses to our community. I also publish a newpaper that tells of nothing but "good" news and provides positive and useful information for our community (if you read just under the banner on the front page it even says "Please support your local businesses."). The County has also just begun construction on a new "spec" building in the new industrial park in Early Branch where we will now have rail access to try to bring in new industry. I am also a "highly charged" taxpayer in this community and again I say that if you don't like the job I am doing you have the right to try to change that come November. I also know who you are and wouldn't have expected any less of you. How are things on the loop?

Ignorance

Chris you live in a County where ignorance is bliss and rumors are fact.  I've lived with it for 26 years now.  People don't think for themselves they just go with the flow.  And even IF the county council held away companies like Walmart for example (which isn't possible) that's a good thing.  If walmart came to town (I refuse to shop at walmart by the way as they are what's wrong with America) it would bankrupt EVERY single small town business owner in Hampton County.  Is that what you think this town needs?

Life

I enjoy the simple life I live here.  I enjoy eating at Ts and El Ranchito and Hong Kong.  I do wish Model Ts would close down BUT as a whole I rarely ever leave the town to spend money even though I work in Hilton Head...... On the weekends I either go to Hot Shots or I have a party at my house (which I couldn't do when I lived in a big town due to ordinances).  The moral of my story is if you don't like small town life then why did you choose to live in Hampton?

When & Where.....

Hey Chuck, when and where is the next party!!!!!LOL!!!

Been working non stop the

Been working non stop the last month or two.  Haven't even been able to see MIke and Tina at Hot Shots in a month or so

I stand corrected Chris

I am a big enough person to admit when I have said or done wrong and I want to apologize for my ignorance about the state laws concerning Walmart. I guess I listened to more passed on gossip than actually checking the facts. I don't care that you know who I am as far as some loop I have no knowledge of what you may be referring to but any way I am have lived in larger towns most of my life with so much more available it is still hard to adjust to the idea of having to travel 35 miles to go to a Walmart or more choices in restaurants. I live here because I love and respect my husband and his wishes to be near his ailing mother. I know longer have my mother and I am also sorry if I offended so many people. I have lost 3 friends lately and I was upset and I put my foot in my big mouth as I have a custom to do. To talk before I pray. Again I am sorry and I will definitely try to be more intelligent in the future.I pray you will all find it in your hearts to forgive me. God Bless

No forgiveness necessary...

Debi, there is no need for forgiveness from me, I just want people to try to understand and know the facts of some of these situations that occur in Hampton County, especially when county government or County Council is not responsible for it. I nor anyone, whether they are on County Council or a citizen in the community, is perfect. All I or anyone else can do is strive do make the fewest mistakes as possible and to do the best job they can at whatever they do (especially when you are an elected official that is representing hard working taxpayers and spending their money). I also wish we had more businesses in our community and once we come out of this economic crisis that the entire planet is suffering through maybe we will. In the mean time we are trying to encourage economic development with what we have to work with. I also must apologize for thinking you are someone that you obviously aren't. If you were the person I was thinking you may be I never would have resceived the  response I got from you. Thanks for your input and trust me when I say that I have you beat when it comes to putting my foot in my mouth! Have a great day!!!

By the way it's Occam's razor

It's Occam's razor, a principle named after William of Occam, a 14th century philosopher...

Felt a correction needed to be made...

I'll thank you.....

I'll thank you two weeks from now! LOL!

Oops, a little late for that!

It's actually funny that I missed that. I just used it a couple of weeks before that and spell checked it because I had only heard it and had never used it before. I'm usually pretty good at that but I guess not that time.
