Man charged with DUI in crash

First Byline:
Michael M. DeWitt, Jr.

HAMPTON - Alcohol may have been a factor in a Friday night crash that sent a Varnville teenager to a Georgia hospital with serious injuries.
Michael Folk, of 145 Kinard Lane, Hampton, was charged with Felony DUI after a two-vehicle collision about 1.8 miles south of Hampton near the local radio station on Friday night,  says the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Latasia Holmes, 18, of 618 Dennis Boulevard, Varnville, was flown by LifeNet helicopter to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Hampton County EMS. Holmes was briefly entrapped in her vehicle and after extrication was flown from Wendell Crews' yard, a private residence designated as a county emergency landing zone.
SCHP spokesperson Lance Corp. Judd Jones said that around 11:40 p.m. Folk was traveling west on Pocotaligo Road in a 1998 Chevrolet truck when he apparently disregarded a stop sign and struck Holmes' 2001 Honda four door, which was traveling south on Highway 601 South, in a t-bone type collision. There was heavy damage reported to both vehicles.
Folk was transported via ambulance by Hampton County EMS to the Hampton Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, said Jones.
