Estill woman arrested on larceny charges, receives bond
An Estill woman arrested Monday on petit larceny and grand larceny charges received bond on both charges Wednesday from Judge Carolyn Williams.
Amanda Jane Smoak, 29, of 936 Ginn Hill Road, Estill, was arrested on March 1 and charged with one count of petit larceny and one count of grand larceny.
Williams gave Smoak a $1,000 bond on the petit larceny charge and a $2,500 bond on the grand larceny charge. Although bond was set on the grand larceny charge, Smoak will now be required to appear in Hampton County General Sessions Court on the charge on May 21, according to the Magistrate's Office. She had not made bond as of noon Wednesday.
According to the Hampton County Sheriff's Office, Smoak was initially arrested after investigators discovered she had stolen two computers, two cameras, and a backpack from a residence on 4706 Harper Road, later selling the items for cash and drugs. The crimes occurred some time in February and also on March 1. The residence was one she and her mother had been cleaning. The homeowners had initially reported the items stolen on Feb. 14. Smoak allegedly placed the computer into a trash bag, as though she were hauling off the trash from the residence.
According to the HSCO, Smoak's mother was unaware what had taken place, as Amanda Smoak saidshe would always take her mother home and then take the trash off, according to investigators. Amanda Smoak also has an extensive criminal history, including numerous forgery charges.

Why is this news?
Curious. Why would this make such a big blurb of news? Couldn't it be a 2-3 liner as other petty criminal arrests are......especially considering that she's been released on bail?
