Watch Out!
Could the Town of Hampton be the next Cottageville? I have heard several stories recently of motorists being pulled by overzealous Hampton police for speeding less than five miles per hour over the posted limit. I have heard some drivers recieved tickets while others received written or verbal warnings. So, why have Hampton police recently begun this very strict enforcement of speed limit laws? Did a recent event cause them to retaliate against the citizens? Has a secret directive been issued by the Mayor and Council to increase the town treasurey by writing more tickets? It has been a long standing unwritten rule by Hampton police to "ignore" motorists driving less than ten miles per hour over the posted limit so it is a bit curious why the Hampton police are making us look like Cottageville, which is notorious for being a speed trap. Perhaps our news media can look into this recent change in policy. In the meanwhile, watch the gas pedal as you drive through Hampton or you could be next!
I'm surprised at you.....
Jwales, you would be the last person I would expect to post hearsay on this sight. lol. I would have thought you would have seen some of the actual tickets that have been written by these officers first before posting your comments about folks getting tickets for driving less than 5 miles per hour over the speed limit or for that matter some of them being let go after being stopped. A highway patrolman stopped me for speeding back in January between Hampton and Brunson ( I didn't know him and he didn't know me as he was from near Orangeburg Co. and was patroling down here) I wasn't paying attention and was going 66 in a 55. I told him I usually set my cruise control on 61 or 62. His response was, "You know the speed limit is 55." He was right!
Watch Out 2
Guess it depends on how you denfine hearsay, CBH. I know one of the people who was pulled and given a warning. This individual was talking to their friends about the traffic stop and a couple of them related the same thing happened to them and at least one admitted to getting a ticket. So that is how I based my comments. I also was in the Town of Hampton's traffic court not too long ago and a Hampton Police officer testified under oath that they do not stop motorists for speeding less than ten miles per hour over the posted limit and that is where I got my information about the unwritten policy. So, as I say, it is a little surprising and somewhat troubling that the "policy" has changed recently and I have to wonder why. We have enough problems in this town and we certainly don't want to get the reputaiton as a speed trap.
Thanks for the respons....
Thanks for the response and it does sound like a little more than hearsay, you just didn't make that clear the first time. I will again add however that the speed limit is 30, 35, or 40 in the town limits and maybe 45 in one or two places. That's the "speed limit" not 3,5,or 10 miles over the SPEED LIMIT. Limit refers to the end of the scale not the beginning. That's their perogative. It's just like the guy that starts going 55 100 yards before he gets to the 55 mile per hour sign. It's only 55 after you get to the sign, not when you can see the sign. I don't agree with it but it is the law. And yes we could get that reputation if it keeps up. Also what's fair for one is fair for everyone! Not disagreeing with you, just making a point.
It Is The Law
CBH, I am not disagreeing with you. The speed limit is the speed limit. But most law enforcement officers don't bother with drivers going between 1 and 5 miles per hour over the limit. For one they would be writing tickets continiously and for two I understand they give a little leeway on the chance your speedometer may be off just a bit. I think it is very petty on the officer's part to be targeting drivers for such a minor infraction and I can't help but wonder why it has recently started. And as another caution I will tell everyone that you cannot exceed the speed limit to pass someone. I got a $70 ticket for doing just that. I just cannot imagine there is a driver in the world that isn't guilty of that infraction.
I know I am....
I know I am!
Sainthood....
CBH I have read that you want more positive comments on this blog so here you go...I appreciate that you leave comments on this site. I also think you are an awesome person for spending your time on our county council. I love reading your paper that comes out every month with only positive news about Hampton County. Keep up the good work. By the way maybe you should become a police officer so you can explain that speed "limit" law to all of the people who think driving 30 through the middle of Hampton is crazy when we can drive 45 when kids are getting out of Ben Hazel. I hear from the gossip around town that Hampton is looking for a police officer. You might want to consider taking that on as your next job. Good luck.
I appreciate the thought....
Thanks for the positive info varnville gal, as well as the compliments. Unfortunately I don't think I'm ready to become a police officer. The pay is bad, you are constantly scrutinized by the public and most folks only remember what they consider to be the WRONG things that you do. Kind of like when you're are on County Council. LOL! My intent in my last blog was that I am tired of seeing people singled out individually for the problems that occur in Hampton County. Very rarely are these problems the fault of one individual. Hearsay and false information are for gossipers and liars and allowing it to be done by nameless/faceless people should not be tolerated in this forum. In the future I will post on here with my name on it or I wont post at all.
