Seven of the Hampton School District One Red Guardsmen were selected to Region Four Honor Band. Over a dozen Hampton School District One band members auditioned Jan. 9 at Summerville High School against hundreds of other band students from throughout the Lowcountry for a chance to be selected to the Region Four Honor Band or the All-State Band.
"I am pleased with the results and proud of the commitment and talent the band continues to show," said Band Director Joe Meshach.
One of the students selected for Region Four Honor Band was Ashly Carroll who is in seventh grade and has been in band for two years. She plays base clarinet and made fourth chair in the Region Four Honor Band. Her mother is Wanda Carroll and they live in Varnville.
Yanira Chaparro Layer has been in band four years and is a ninth grader. She plays the trombone and is an alternate to the Region Four Honor Band. Her parents are Jose Chaparro and Rebecca Layer. Yanira lives in Hampton. She was also rookie of the year in 2008-09 and most outstanding brass player 2008-09.
Aja Willis has been in band for four years and is a ninth grader. She plays the flute and is a fourth alternate to the Region Four Honor Band. He mother is Titia Garvin and Willis lives in Varnville. In 2006-07 Willis was in the top three band members and in 2007-08 she was named rookie of the year.
Chandler Mole has been playing in the band for four years and is a ninth grader. He plays alto saxophone and made fifth chair to the Region Four Honor Band. His parents are Phyllis Mole Edwin Mole. Chandler lives in Varnville.
Joshua Mole has been in band for two years and is an eighth grader. He plays the tuba and made fifth chair to Region Four Honor Band. His parents are Maria Thompson and Michael Thompson. Mole lives in Hampton. This year was his first time competing on the region level.
Devin Green is a ninth grader and has been in band for four years. He plays the snare drums and came in as a first alternate for the Region Four Honor Band. His parents are Linda Green and Johnnie Green. Devin is from Varnville. In the past he made two superiors when he had to do a solo and a duet for solo and ensemble competition.
Shauann Barnes is a senior at Wade Hampton. He has been in band for six years and plays the snare drum. He made fifth chair to the Region Four Honor Band. His parents are Jerome Barnes and Priscilla Barnes. Shauann is from Varnville. In the past he has made All State and All Region two other times in his band career.
These students will participate in the region band clinic and perform a concert Feb. 26-27 at Charleston Southern University.
"I am very proud of them for at least trying out, let alone making it," said Meshach. "This means they're amongst the best band students for the entire region of the Lowcountry. It makes me feel proud that I have students capable of doing this. It is a sense of accomplishment to know that you have students willing to put in that extra effort."
