3 charged in string of break-ins

First Byline:
Michael M. DeWitt, Jr.

VARNVILLE - Two adults and one juvenile have been charged in connection with a string of larcenies from vehicles that occurred on the night of Jan. 21 in Varnville.
Chris Chesser, 23, of 36 Eaton Lane, Fairfax; and Brett A. Converse, approximately 18 years of age, of 158 Cedar Lane, Hampton, were charged by the Varnville Police Department with five counts of larceny from a motor vehicle.
A 16-year-old Varnville juvenile is also believed to be involved, and five juvenile petitions were signed against him for the same charges.
The three were arrested on Jan. 22 in connection with a string of larcenies that included:
- The theft of two five gallon cans of diesel fuel and an MP3 player from two vehicles at a Smith Street residence.
- The theft of a Gateway laptop computer, a GPS system, and an Apple I-Pod from a vehicle on Smith Street.
- The theft of $160 in cash and several credit cards from a vehicle on Highland Street.
- The theft of a set of golf clubs from a vehicle on Smith Street.
- The theft of a set of Adams golf clubs and Nike golf bag from a residence on Park Street.
Smith said that officers were led to the suspects when, while responded to a report of an incorrigible juvenile who had been out all night drinking with friends, officers discovered the stolen goods outside the home.
Smith added that all of the property had been recovered and returned to the owners except for the laptop computer.
"It's sad because people's property got stolen from locked vehicles, but I am glad that we were able to apprehend these young men and get their property back," said Smith. "I still encourage people to take valuable property from their vehicles at night and call 911 immediately if you suspect suspicious activity."
Smith added that charges were also pending on the subjects with the Hampton Police Department concerning incidents at three businesses in the Town of Hampton.
