Annual IAN Buddy Walk a success

IAN Buddy Walk draws crowds and smiles,

  • Event namesake and organizer Ian Lawton, middle, poses for a picture with several friends as walkers near the end of a march around the WHHS.

The fourth annual Intelligent Ambitious No-Limits Down Syndrome Buddy Walk took place the morning of Oct. 14. An enthusiastic group of Wade Hampton High School JROTC cadets flew flags alongside families and friends marching in support of those living with Down Syndrome.

Organizers would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful group of volunteers who made the event a success, especially the “Buddies” in attendance; Mekhi Johnson, Sara Ohl, Ian Lawton, Vionna Mays, Brandon Koon and Benjamin E Gant.

The Buddy Walk promotes awareness with a celebration of love and support for people with Down Syndrome.  More than 100 individuals attended the event, some traveling from as far away as Clinton, S.C. and Georgia.

Music played by a DJ, rock painting, pumpkin tie-dying, corn hole boards, a bounce house and a treasurer rock hunt were enjoyed by those who attended the celebration.  The one-mile walk was led and followed by the WHHS NJROTC with a Parade of Flags. Members of the WHHS BETA club and JAG also graciously volunteered their time.
