Dr. Rahn made his comments during a regular report to the Board of Regents on the progress of expanding medical education in Georgia. He argued that remaining focused on the benefits to human health would move the discussion beyond the nuts and bolts, such as developing a curriculum, of putting together a branch campus in Athens.

"We've got to get above the mundane issues," Dr. Rahn said. "We have to attend to those issues. ... But we've got to keep this higher purpose in mind as we're doing that."

AIKEN - Gerald J. Hooker, 68, beloved husband of Opal Cook Hooker died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.


Rudolph Sauls

VARNVILLE - Mr. Rudolph Sauls, 80, of 1104 Yemassee Highway, Varnville, died Monday, February 6, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Veda Nell Smith Sauls.
Funeral services will be held 3 pm, Thursday, February 9, 2012 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Johnson-St. Paul Cemetery.


Pauline Asplin Hart

HAMPTON - Mrs. Pauline Asplin Hart, 96, of Joey St. in Hampton died at her residence on Saturday morning February 4th, 2012 after an extended illness. She was the widow of Gordon Davis Hart.
Born October 26th, 1915 in Cleveland, OH she was the daughter of the late William Edward Asplin and Josephine Black Asplin. Mrs. Hart was a homemaker, and an avid reader and bridge player. She was the oldest member of the Varnville 1st. Baptist Church, and a member of the Eastern Star.


Karl Smith Bowers

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Karl Smith Bowers, 70, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 at Ashland United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel.


Beatrice Crosby DeLoach

HAMPTON - Mrs. Beatrice Crosby DeLoach, 86, of 108 Plywood Street, Hampton, SC, left this world for Heaven on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. She was born October 1, 1925 in Grays, SC, Jasper County, to the late Miles Barney Crosby and the late Annie Florence Shipes Crosby. She graduated from Grays High School in 1943. Mrs. DeLoach was married to her one true love, the late Charles Aiken DeLoach, Sr. on January 15, 1944. She was a compassionate and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs.


Dale Lynn Daley Gutierrez

Mrs. Dale Lynn Daley Gutierrez, 53, of Altman Road in Hampton, died Sunday January 29th, 2012 at the Joseph M. Still Burn Unit in Augusta, GA after an extended illness.
Born February 19th, 1958 in Salisbury, MD, she was the daughter of J. D. and Eleanor Daley. Mrs. Gutierrez was a homemaker and attended Open Arms Fellowship Church in Hampton.


Muriel Ethel Harvey Jacobson

Mrs. Muriel Ethel Harvey Jacobson, 89, of Shaw Drive in Hampton died Wednesday January 25th, 2012 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Born in the Miley community of Hampton County she was the daughter of the late Hagood Irving Harvey and Mary Harvey. Mrs. Jacobson was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and had worked at Hutto's Five and Dime, Parkers Day Care, and Allied Department Store all in Hampton. She was the widow of Mr. Ted Henry Jacobson.


Deborah Ann Horton

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - Mrs. Deborah Ann Horton Kotora, 59, of Daytona Beach, FL, died January 6th, 2012 in Port Orange, FL after an extended illness.
Born October 7th, 1952 in Ehrhardt, SC, she was the daughter of James Francis Horton and Louise Adell Brown Horton. She worked as a waitress in Florida and was of the Baptist faith.


Frances Loretta Miley Major

VARNVILLE - Frances Loretta Miley Major, a daughter of the late Mrs. Eloise Smith Miley and Mr. Isaac Miley, was born in Hampton County on June 18, 2012. After the death of her parents, she was reared by the the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Rosa Lee Bowers. At an early age, she joined Cherry Grove Christian Church, Brunson, SC where she served on the Usher Board and Inspirational Choir, and was a custodian. She attended the public schools of Hampton County and was a member of the Potter's Wheel Biblical Study Group.
