Monkey photo in web site
Submitted by Marcia on Tue, 07/06/2010 - 10:03am.
My web site www.marciawood.net has a photo of the monkey on the vehicle as it appeared in the Watermelon Festival Parade. My comments are also included in the site. When you view the photo, one may come to his/her own conclusion. Please let us stop the assault on the Shriners.

Marcia, Hopefully your
Marcia,
Hopefully your picture will bring closure to this ridiculous debate. I think that what the young man overheard was someone's personal feelings about the entry. Could it be that she is not an Obama supporter and made a comment in public that should have been reserved for a more private setting? I see why the young man would have taken offense to yet another disrespectful remark towards our Commander in Chief, but let's not make a mountain out of a mole's hill. We have bigger fish to fry as a nation: BP gas spill, poverty.....et. al. Remember the words of a great president: "A house divided....cannot stand." We can impact the world more as a people united!
No harm intended!
Kemille77 don't need to apologize for anything. That picture proves nothing! There's no evidence when and where it was taken. It's sad that it's hard to recognize the hurt and insult that some of our citzens received from the display. Why have the monkey at all? What purpose did it serve? Let's be real the display of a monkey for many people is representative of black people. FYI I didn't post my name because I know how vindictive some people can be in this community. Look what happened with the Patrick Henry incident. Instead of trying to justify or excuse it, let's just say..."No Harm Intended, We apologize!"

SO JUSTAPARENT SINCE YOU SEEM TO THINK ALL MONKEYS REPRESENT BLACK PEOPLE WHAT ABOUT AT THE ZOO THEY ARE KEPT IN CAGES THERE AND SOMETIMES WITH COLLARS ON THEIR NECK ARE YOU SAYING THAST YOU FIND THAT OFFENSIVE AS WELL .. NOT ALL PEOPLE CENTER THEIR LIVES ON RASICM THAT SHRINER I AM SURE DID NOT WANT TO OFFEND ANY ONE . THE PERSON WHO MADE THAT SMART REMARK AB OUR PRESIDENT IS THE PERSON AT BLAME I AM SAYING THAT KEMILLE 77 GOT MAD AT THAT PERSONS COMMENT AND DIRECTED THAT ANGER AND FRUSTRATION TOWARDS THE SHRINERS. WHO EVER MADE THAT COMMENT ABOUT MAKING AMOUNTAIN OUT OF A MOLE HILL HIT THE NAIL SQUARE IN THE HEAD BECAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED ....
Naive
You are so NAIVE if you don't think the image of monkeys have been used to represent black people. It's wrong, plain and simple. As for the monkeys at the zoo, I don't see them in clothes and they sure don't have ropes on them OF ANY KIND. AGAIN! WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE MONKEY! EVIDENTLY, THE PERSON WHO MADE THE COMMENT THINK MONKEYS DO! The festival creates racial division in the county and that's the plain truth. How many black grand marshalls, how many black people on the committee, how many black girls have won the pageant, how many bands have the committee used that had music that would appeal to black and white people. I don't know to many black people who like beach and country music HECK FOR THAT FACT LOTS OF WHITE PEOPLE DON'T EITHER! Look at this past grand marshall, why wasn't Cecil Jenkins considered or any of the black coaches from Estill! They have contributed to sports and had championship teams! THIS IS A MOUNTAIN! AND GOD WILL MOVE IT!
All I can comment on......
To justaparent2, as Festival Chairman from 2004-2009 all I can do is comment on what happened with the Festival during those 5 years. If I am not mistaken the monkey in question was on the same Shriner's vehicle for those 5 years and never once did we have a complaint about it. As far as Grand Marshals, Queens and the Committee go, two years ago the Festival celebrated having its 1st African American Miss Coastal Empire The Festival Committee each year honors all the local queens(Black & White) in the county with gifts and recognition. Any young lady that meets the requirements may participate in Miss/Teen Miss Coastal Empire, which by the way is a preliminary pageant to Miss South Carolina and Teen Miss South Carolina. The pageant is run professionally and the judges are pageant judges that are not local. In the past few years I will say that there has been more participation than ever before by African-American young ladies.
As for grand marshals and dedications, in the last few years the festival has been dedicated to the local military (which has both black & white members) and Scouting in Hampton County which includes both black and white members. Gen. Arnold Fields was a parade marshal during that time, I believe that Dwight Smith was one year and I am sure there have been others. This year alone there was a basketball exhibition put on by a Hampton Co. young man that has been playing professionally. Gen. Fields is also the guest performer with his rendition of the national anthem at the Miss Coastal Empire pageant and on Saturday during the speaking events.
As for the events, there is not a single event that all can not participate in. IF THEY CHOOSE TO DO SO!!!! Usually more than half of the participants at the "Battle of the Towns" are African-American, black children participate in Children's Day, Youth Parade, etc. Hundreds of African-Americans come out for Family Fun Day. If not for the African-American community and the money they spend, many of the vendors would not even be here. They go wherever the money is. The list goes on and on. The Festival is what "you" make of it. BY the way, the "Beach Music" that you refer to derives from black music from the 50's and 60's plus the fact that the Beach Band always includes a huge variety of music as well as some R & B. If country isn't that popular with whites and blacks as you say, then why are we surrounded by country music stations. It's because they play the kind of music that people want to here, which makes the station's ratings go up, so they can sell more advertising, so they can stay in business.
Finally, it is true that Roy Hollingsworth is the only African-American member of the Festival Committee. Roy handles all the Melon Judging for the Festival and does a fantastic job. Roy chose to be on the Committee just like you or anyone else can chose to be on the Committee. All you have to do is show up for a meeting and join. I will tell you this though, anyone that joins (BLACK or WHITE)isn't going to just show up for meetings, they are going to work. The Committee is shorthanded enough as it is. All of the people on the Festival Committee are dedicated to putting on a Festival for all to enjoy. I find your statement "The festival creates racial division in the county" to be offensive, derisive and racist. By the way, you not putting your name on your blog, after making statements like you have, are nothing more than cowardly and gives you no credibility at all! Fix the problem, dont make it worse!
Chris Haulsee
My point exactly
Tell the truth and shame the devil! With the information you just posted helped me prove my point. Those are some sad, sad numbers for 68 years of existence! As far as stating my name, I chose not to because I do live and work in this community and people do spikeful things. There's not cowardly, it's easy to express one's views when there's no threat of harm because of them. If Kemille77 didn't have that protection all of this would not be discussed. A fear of retribution may be why nothing has been said about the monkey in the past. Fear of retribution stop alot of people from posting their name. Stepping on people's toes is a dangerous thing. Having anonymity can be a good thing. Heck many crimes and wrong doing has been solved because people felt free to talk when they knew their identity is hidden. So I don't buy that coward junk. Racism is why this blog has created so much conversation. Regardless what any one individual feel including myself, there is a problem in our community when it comes to race relations and that's a fact that we can not continue to over look. If the festival didn't create a racial division in the county why is this blog such a hot topic with the issue of race at the center? If I didn't make that post, you would have never gave those statistics. I have said my peace about and therefore will not respond to anymore posts because I have a life to live and people have to want to change and all was needed was an apology not justification and being defensive.
CANT TELL
IF YOU HAVE A LIFE TO LIVE WHY NOT JUST SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND LIVE IT ....... IF YOU FEEL THIS TOWN IS SO RACIST WHY STAY HERE .. AND IF YOU FEEL THE FESTIVAL IS THEN DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE IT DO NOT WHINE ON THE WEBSITE ABOUT SOMETHING YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING TO TRY AND CHANGE.........
QUIDA
PS AND AS A BLACK WOMAN I DON T ASSOCIATE MYSELF AS OR WITH MONKEYS OR APES... SO WHY DO YOU ...
yes racism is why this blog
What I'm about to say I hope does not come across as rude or anything but direct... I've been made aware that I have no tact and what I usually see as direct others seem to take as rude.
yes racism is why this blog was created... the ignorance of a woman who compared a stuffed toy monkey to the first black President (and she was in the wrong no matter how you look at it) combined with the hurt of hundreds of years of stories and struggles passed down through families like it was an heirloom to be cherished that leads to nothing but resentment and anger towards people in the modern world who had nothing to do with it by people who did not experience any of it. That being said I understand some people here were actually alive during the civil rights movement, but there were many who were not and no one here was around during the days of slave trade.
I understand that there are hints & signs that you could begin to
get offended over but there's nothing specifically wrong with it. But you have to understand something... we're not talking about a charity group driving through town with a tar baby slapped on the hood, it was a stuffed monkey with mardi gras beads around it's neck, NOTHING MORE!
If it was an honest to God noose I'd agree with you. You cannot get bent out of shape every time you see a toy monkey just because ignorant people in the past represented black people with a monkey. If you cannot understand that, I suggest you stay off the stuffed animal aisle at Wal-Mart around St. Valentine's day. It's wall to wall stuffed monkeys... apparently stuffed monkeys are more popular than teddy bears.
If you have a problem with toy animals in clothes then you are just S.O.L., human beings as a species has some unexplainable desire to humanize everything we come into contact with. That's why we have toy animals in clothes, cartoon animals in clothes and people who talk to their cats like they understand them (even I'm guilty of the cat thing)
I mean seriously... we've already established that these groups are hillbilly descendants of scotch/irish immigrants and hillbillies hunt and eat raccoons. I guarantee that people would still insist it was a racial thing if it was a toy raccoon (probably less b/c I'd like to see someone compare Obama to a raccoon). Also if they wanted to be derogatory with this monkey I don't think they would have empowered it by giving it a sawed off double barreled shotgun.
But are you honestly trying to pull the "the pageant is racist because there are not more black winners" card? No... the pageant would be racist if they kept black young ladies out of it all together. As far as people on the committee let me explain something to you, it's a volunteer issue plain and simple. If you want more black people on the committee then I suggest you sign up. They don't recruit for committee members because if you don't want to be there you're not going to be of any help. That's why the committee is made of VOLUNTEERS, people who actually care and want to be a part of it. Maybe if there were more VOLUNTEERS from the black community we could get more feedback from the black community.

I would like to point out at this point that I dislike using the term "black"... however I personally find the term "African American" to be wrong. If you were born in America you're American, if you were born in Africa then get U.S. citizenship you're African American.
chris haulsee i applaud you :)
I THINK YOUR COMMENT IS VERY WELL SAID AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT I APPLAUD YOU FOR A JOB WELL DONE :) XOXOX
Alot of talk and no new answers
I would like to commend you Speak the Truth for taking a stance that apparently others do not choose. That is the problem with both racism and percieved racism in our world today. We all have memories of things that were said to us during our life that have made an impact on us in one way or another. It is all in how you use the knowledge that is available these days to overcome the adversity in our lives. The debate over racism could go on forever with any ethnic group out there. People are foulable, we do not always get along, that is for certain. Personally I choose to judge people by their actions rather than their sex, color or standing in the community. If more people were to do this there would be far less trouble in the world. I think that all in all readers have learned some new information and should take advantage of it. If you are not satisfied with what is going on in your community you have to be willing to make an effort to try to change it! Get involved however you can and make a change. If that is the only good thing that is to come out of this never ending debate then it has served a very valuable purpose. So my question to everyone is this.......Are you willing to sacrifice your time to help make things better for everyone? Or are you just going to sit back and complain about how things never change without trying to help?
Full Picture on Guardian Web Site
The full picture of the one in question is in Michael Dewitt’s Picture Gallery on the Guardian Web Site. The group of pictures is entitled, “Parade”. In fact, Michael photographed just about everything in the parade, including the vehicle in question. I cropped the monkey from the front of the vehicle it was attached to and enlarged it for a better view. I sent it to a couple of people so they could see the actual picture and would not just think about it from someone’s misinterpretation. Marcia, thank you for posting the picture; wish I had thought of that earlier…Hazel
