DRESS CODE FOR TEACHERS

I recently attended awards day at Ben Hazel Primary, and was shocked at some of the way the teachers were dressed. Two of the teachers on stage had on dresses , but wore flipflops. One of the teachers had on shorts. I have since spoken to other parents, and they say almost anything goes over there. Shorts, low-cut tops, flipflops, tattoo's on their legs, etc.

My point is, if my child is held accountable for his dress code, why aren't the teachers???

Dress Code

I was really surprised by your comments.  It is because of these dedicated teachers that Ben Hazel is a nationally recognized, award winning school.  These teachers face large class sizes, budget cuts, and now that the school is has met AYP, the number of students has caused class size to increase at an even more rapid rate and has put strict demands on instruction while battling behaviors.  The teachers have all of these obstacles to deal with while trying to educate YOUR child, and you have the nerve to complain about what they wear?! It is painstakingly evident that you have no idea what goes on inside of a classroom.  First of all, there is no way that an effective elementary school teacher can "dress up" for school because they are required to be active.  Second of all, in all of the 100+ times I have ever been inside of Ben Hazel, I have never seen any inappropriate dress from the teachers.  I feel that they dress appropriately for the job that they are required to do.  Show some appreciation rather than criticism.  Rather than being concerned about the attire of award's day, let's blog about the fact that there's no decent place to have it in the building.  A local church generously allows the use of their building for special programs.  That is a more pressing issue that you should be concerned about.

Seriously????

Apparently you have not visited this award winning school very often and are totally unaware of the dedication and committment of this faculty and staff or you would not have wasted your time with this trivial complaint! Ones footwear has nothing to do with his/her ability to teach and personally I would rather see flipflops than high heeled street walker shoes...but again, this has nothing to do with how someone teaches. Secondly tattoos are a personal choice and an expression of someone's personality or beliefs. There are many people who wear tatoos in honor or memory of very special occassions and/or people. Again, I fail to see how this has anything to do with someone's ability to be an effective educator. I have personally had three children go through Ben Hazel Primaryand you would be hard pressed to find a more loving, dedicated, and  child-oriented group of educators. SO, does it really matter what kind of shoes they wear??

teachers

They do have some great looking teachers there.Never seen one dressed in a bad way though.I think if they are giving your kid a good education let them dress comfortable.I'm sure you do at your job also.

Dress Code For Teachers

I feel strongly that teachers should abide by a dress code as well.  The “do as I say and not as I do” attitude causes nothing but disrespect from the students.  I love Hampton County and this is where my children have grown up their entire academic lives, so I have seen it time and time again at PTO meetings, Awards day, and other school functions.  I asked a teacher why the double standard was there and the reply I got shocked me.  She stated that she had already been through school and got the certification and education so that allowed her to dress comfortable. I asked that if she had to wear uniform in school.  Her reply was no and I rebutted that in other words she had been allowed to dress comfortable her entire life, but the children of Hampton can’t while they work hard to acquire the education that she already had mastered.   How is that fair?  Teachers should lead by example first of all.  I am not saying that it is all teachers because through the years my daughters have had some really great teachers that did lead by example, but I have seen others with flip flops on and low cut shirts also.  If the kids have to abide by a dress code then so should the teachers and administration of the schools.

Everyone is entitled to

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  My opinion is that Ben Hazel is an excellent school with some excellent teachers.  Teachers are entitled to dress comfortably because unless you have been a teacher or  teacher assistant you may not be aware of how challenging their jobs are today.  Teachers as well as other early education professionals have to deal with some rude, unruly children for at least 7 hours of the day.  And let's not mention what their salary is here in South Carolina! I'm not saying they should be able to wear anything that is inappropriate but uniforms??? Really???? A teacher's number one priority is to provide a good education for the students.  Teachers and students should not have to abide by the same rules simply because the students are children and not adults.

For someone to say almost

For someone to say almost anything goes at Ben Hazel is downright low.  I have never seen a teacher who was inappropriately dressed.  Yes the teachers may have had on flip-flops or whatever but when I attended my child's awards day I was more concerned about the program than what the teachers were wearing.  On that day students were allowed to wear what they wanted to wear so why not the teachers?
