Submitted by lento on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:09pm. I agree with u man. I just commented on the same thing. This paper is funny how they have nothing better to do but erase peoples comments all nite. Like I said before our corner broke two SC Legislation Laws and I know these to be facts and in the end the truth will come out. It want be on HCG because they delete the truth. you can go to online to public records and find out that Chief McAlhaneys lawsuit is active.! As far as Sgt Cook goes I wish him the best. Like someone told me today it is Hamptons lose and someone elses gain to loose an officer like him must hurt. The family and good ole boy system in Hampton one day will not be here. Someone will take up for what is right. Public get out of your comfort zone vote them out. Its an election year that is why this is going down like this. It takes a good man to resign before he would let his Chief loose his job. Dang bo, way to go Chief. Alot is known and alot will come out. See there is alot the town of Hampton doesnt know that they kept from yall. They made Sgt Cook look like the bad guy when in reality he was going to a call to back up a veteran officers. Partners do this. Sorry Shirley Watkins acted on her on behalf and kept pulling out but KARMA works out in favor of all good. Hampton Co this is for you. Sgt Cook I wish you luck, you will be missed and I know we will see you again as Chief one day. Login or register to post comments
McAlhaney
Submitted by 3_times_lucky on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:28pm. Couldn't agree more.. I did my own online investigating and found the same information and wondered why or how he wasn't forced to resign for his part in his own "Accident" makes ya wonder. Again I wonder if it's not about how well you do your job but "who you know".. Justice will be served when the ones who have tried to ruin a Great Man will have to account for their actions on Judgement day before the Lord himself...To Sgt. Cook and his family I am truly sorry for the way Hampton has treated you and your family, and everyone who has not stood up for you should be truly ashamed of themselves. Gotta go people need to hit the streets but Cook you have my 100% support. You know where to find me. The truth will come out about the dirt that was done to you. Get Well. Not quite right.
Submitted by 3_times_lucky on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:19pm. I too feel that Sgt. Cook was treated unfairly. My feelings on this subject is Those with NO sin cast the first stone. But as we all know none of us are without sin. Why force a highly decorated officer to resign for a total ACCIDENT. Has NO ONE else on the force ever been involved in a similar accident and forced to resign. From my understanding no. Why make him an example of "Justice" when others before him could have been put through the same ridicule and forced to leave his position.. I guess it's not about how well you protect and serve your community that counts but who you know in high places that matter to the town council and the mayor. I think major changes need to be made on the Town Council, Mayor and others in "high" positions. I initally moved to Hampton due to the qualities of the small "hometown" atmosphere. Sgt. Cook from the time I met him went out of his way to help me if I ever needed the advice of an officer. I have had dealings with other officers on the Hampton PD that came across that I was wasting their time and didn't even bother to take the time to help. Again Sgt. Cook took the time and consideration that an officer commited to his job would do. I told my kids that if they ever needed an officer they could count on it is Sgt. Jeffery Cook. It is with a heavy heart that I say the Hampton PD has lost the best officer this town had to offer. I wish him and his family my thoughts and prayers, and that when one door closes God will open another one for him where he will be appreciated. No matter what happens I will support him in whatever direction his life takes him...Thank you Sgt. Cook for all you have done for me, my family and this town.!!!!!!! Submitted by monialisa on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:33pm. I think you have pin pointed it on the nose. Great job. Now to see if the town cares enough. They need to make a public apology in my opinion. I met Sgt Cook when he was in Varnville and even there in a smaller town he did his job to the fullest. I know now on a much personal level. He is devasted over the way HPD and its council have just turned their backs on him. I keep telling him dont worry keep doing your job and come back here and run this town as Chief. Mark it on your calendar people he will. Everything he strives to do does happen. He is self motivated that is why. Hampton Police Dept. ask yourself does Mike Dewitt report the truth, does the council do truthful things. NO that is why Perry was forced in this position. so who is running the police department; you have to ask yourself that. I thinks over 1700 tickets last year proves Cooks devotion to the council and his chief but guess it wasnt good enough. On the two laws broken I ask my father. He said yes to his knowledge that is accurate. So lento you are on a mission there. The town needs to know how they took a dedicated officers name a smeared it as they quietly broke to sc laws that under oath they swore to uphold. I hope we get a write in candidate for MAYOR. I agree to my familys and hens under one building. I have an idea who will be running against our mayor and with my help he will win. I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE AND I AM NOT PREDJUCE LIKE THEY ARE. We are all Gods children. Sgt Cook love ya man....keep the faith Login or register to post comments

Write In
Submitted by burdencounty on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:58pm. Oh yes...if there is a write in person they have my VOTE AND MY MONEY all the way. Lets clean house, get the citizens of Hampton to notice this mess. I will be looking forward to seeing this. I should have known they did this to him because of Election but what they dont seem to understand is there is alot more middle class, & poor people in this town that needs a new head tohelp them. We definately out way the rich. Sgt Cook I am sorry. I am apologizing for the whole community. You were needed here and we hope you stay. Good loyal cops are hard to find. I am up in the Ranks but I can promise you I climbed a long time. Get well, and come back stronger. You made a difference and remember you still can. Do not give up. Please don't give up!!
Submitted by loud_n_proud on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 11:10pm. Please don't give up and I do hope you will return. My kids have great role model in you and you are someone they look up to. I have yet to explain to my kids why they haven't seen you around town in your cruiser looking out for them. I can't seem to find the right words. Maybe I should send them to the Mayor or better yet let the Chief explain to them why he was able to keep his job, but wasn't willing to stand up for you... Submitted by lento on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 11:37pm. Sgt Cook loves alot of children and does his best to help any of them when he can to lead them in the right direction. His wife has told me on more than one occasion he has had teenagers call him at their residence to ask for advice. He is loved by all children because he takes the time they need to listen when they are in trouble. I agree with you and I am sorry your kids are asking where he is. Maybe the council, mayor, and chief could read that heartfelt message and understand how well like and known he is here in this county. Knowing his wife has helped me understand their pain and suffering through this ordeal. Tell your children Sgt Cook is a decorated officer with 25 plus certifications in fire and police and with his knowledge and his strength he will come back to this town and become Chief very soon. I wish for one minute those men and women on the council could put thereselves in his shoes. They make a rash decision on a report that could be argued incorrect. That is what happens when the council doesnt know who really is for them and who isnt, who is there for a paycheck and who isnt. With family in lawenforcement its not about the money and I know Sgt Cook well enough to know it wasnt about the money. He worked his butt off to get on day shift just to write tickets to please his chief and the council. That wasnt recognized. He had the opportunity to work at a much higher pay with another department years ago and stayed with DPS in Oburg, then chose to come back to his home town. Yes mainly cause his family needed him. Working 45 minutes away from home and you get a bad phone call is horrible so I understand why he came home to work. People look at the picture and not what you read from Mike Dewitt. Its half the story. Sgt Cook needs to be heard, and he needs the support from his hometown. edit

glad someone is talking it up
Submitted by burdencounty on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 10:53pm. All these comments are good to go as they say in the Marines. I havent heard what all is going on but from the comments seems to me like Sgt Cook resigned so his Chief could have a paycheck. I know all bout the electrical problems his car had and how he repeatedly told someone about it. Now since I know our Mate team estimated the speed from a black box. How do you or they know its accurate with a car thay has that many problems. I am an officer and if a cars electrical system keeps screwing up then something is wrong. I know Cook from way back and this man has been through enough and if Hampton gave him up just because a man passed away in an accident four hours later that his ex caused then I hate to say I use to live there. I have been following the updates and until tonight its been quiet. Why? Do they have things to hide? I havent seen an interview from Cook at all. Did the council even let him speak? This man has struggled to get where is at today and for this town to do this to him is horrible. You got cops shooting a people without a weapon in there hand, cops killing someone cause they scared, cops chasing in a no chase policy town and ended up in a death of an innocent girl, cops wrecking cars on there way to work at a high speed, cops cheating left and right on there spouses, but when you have family and good ole boy systems going on this is what you make of it. Then behind all that you have Cook who tried to avoid an accident by going into another lane which unavoidably collided with a know drinker of the town. Was there alcohol levels done on her? Was there an autopsy done on MR cook who passed and God may he rest in peace? When you have a wreck like this these are things that should be a priority first. Get alcohol levels, and make sure any and all measures were taken to clear of a mess and in this case neither were done and yes lento you are right. That is the two laws you are discussing isnt it? Sgt Cook I hope you know this was an ACCIDENT, you are a great officer. God Speed Login or register to post comments
I AGREE THAT WHAT WAS DONE TO SGT COOK IS COMPLETELY UNETHICAL
Submitted by Nicole on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 11:07pm. I AGREE THAT WHAT WAS DONE TO A GREAT OFFICER WHO DID HIS JOB AND DID IT VERY WELL I MIGHT ADD IS COMPLETELY WRONG. ACCIDENTS ARE JUST AS THEY ARE ACCIDENTS NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT THEM. MY QUESTION IS WHERE ARE THE MORALS? DOES ANYONE NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE ANYMORE?...MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO SGT COOK AND HIS FAMILY AS THEY WERE FORCED TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS. HOW CAN A OFFICER'S JOB BE TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM WHEN HE WAS DOING HIS JOB? AN OFFICERS JOB IS TO RESPOND TO ANY CALL THAT IS CALLED INTO 911 DISPATCH, STOPING AND GIVING SITATIONS TO ANYONE WHO IS NOT FOLLOWING THE LAWS THAT ARE CLEARLY POSTED LIKE SPEED LIMIT SIGNS, ALONG WITH A VERY LONG LIST OF OTHER REQUIREMENTS. I DONT SEE HOW THE CHIEF OF POLICE CAN MAKE OR EVEN FIRE SOMEONE AS A RESULT OF AN ACCIENTLIKE SGT COOK'S WHEN HE WAS DOING HIS JOB BY RESPONDING TO A CDV CALL. JUST IN CASE SOME OF YOU READERS DONT KNOW WHAT THAT IS. IT IS A CALL THAT AN OFFICER HAS TO RESPOND TO THAT IN SOME CASES SOMEONE CAN EITHER DIE OR HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT. WHEN THE CHIEF OF POLICE HIMSELF HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT HIMSELF AND THAT VICTIUM WAS DECAPITATED AND DIED ON THE SCENE EVEN THOUGH HE WAS TOLD NOT TO CONTINUE PURSUIT WHICH IS PUBLIC NOTICE AND THE CASE IS ALSO STILL ACTIVE EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN OVER 6 YEARS SINCE THAT DEATH I MIGHT ADD. BUT YET HE IS OUR CHIEF OF POLICE?..SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THAT COULD BE ETHICAL. IS ANYONE BESIDES ME THINKING THAT IF FINGERS ARE GOING TO BE POINTED AND PEOPLE ARE GOING TO LOOSE JOBS THEN CHIEF PERRY SHOULD ALSO BE FORCED TO GIVE IN HIS BADGE, GUN, ETC AND BE FORCED TO RESIGN HIMSELF OR TERMINITATED. Submitted by burdencounty on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 11:47pm. I have read your comment. CDV is criminal domestic violence and you are right someone usually ends up in jail, hurt, or dead. From what I know is he was responding to a regular home and the husband was threating with a gun to kill his wife. In this case Sgt Cook acted just as any officer would have. Save a life as quick as possible and put the phycos in jail. I know the victim he was responding to and this man had already been arrested before several times. Ask yourself if you were a cop responding to this call as quickly as you could and a car decided to pull out in front of you; how would your outcome be any different? It wouldnt have been. Quit blaming officers, ems, fire departments. Start blaming the speeders, criminals, drunks, gangs, and sucide mission people. I will leave that at that. Yes, I agree that Chief should have been made to turn in his badge and gun back then. Remember these words, support your officers that stand up for you, get the rest of them out of the cars, and put them back in the mills where they belong. 10-4 edit

The Other Side
A couple of observations regarding all these posts in support of Officer Cook:
First it is rather obvious most of the posts have been written by the same person because the writing style is so similar (grammar, spelling, etc), thus to suggest the officer has a lot of support is questionable.
Secondly, while you do have first amendment rights to write and say what you want, the Guardian or any news outlet has the right not to publish because of possible slander and libel. The Guardian is reporting what has been provided to them. If Officer Cook believes the Guardian has treated him unfairly then he should call a press conference and tell his side of the story.
Third, to blame or hold the Police Chief responsible for Officer Cooks forced resignation is ludicrous. Hampton Town Council has hire and fire authority over all town employees including police officers.
Fourth, I continue to question the judgment of Officer Cook and believe that is why the preliminary investigation shows he contributed to the crash. How can the officer justify speeding through two stoplights in the middle of town around mid-day when vehicle and pedestrian traffic is heavier? And isn’t it true the alleged CDV victim was actually at the police station meaning there was no threat to the alleged victim and no justification for the officer’s speeding?
Finally, this accident happened about five months ago. Why this continued foot dragging by law enforcement and the solicitor’s office? Release the full report to the public. I have a sneaking suspicion Hampton Town Council has seen the full report and that is the reason for their action.
your opinion
well jwales this is your opinion just like it is everyone elses. From the bible God is the only one to pass judgement surely not you so you may want to revisit the bible before you say you continue to judge someone you dont even know. May God bless you with your unfavorable opinions.
The God Card
Way to go Lento....when your arguments fail just pull the God card. I find it interesting that you accuse me of judging Officer Cook when I merely questioned the judgment of his actions based on the Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation. Using your argument I guess the Highway Patrol is guilty of the same offense. But you should be careful when you invoke God's name to defend yourself and criticize others. You have had posts removed because of the hurtful, baseless and potenially libelous comments you made about the other family. I wonder what the Bible has to say about that.
facts
Jwales I havent said anything hurtful about anyone that isnt true. Seems to me you are either a police officer that is a backstabber, or you are the other family. Either way, I do know what I am talking about to be true. I have very good information and facts from alot of places that it will take lawyers a miracle to get. So yes I may have said some things about Shirley but not Mr cook. I will never disrespect the dead. The baseless comments about the other family well then TELL HER FAMILY & HIS TO QUIT TELLING ME! And by the way if I say God and it offends you then maybe you dont need to say it. Being that said you know so much have fun with your coworkers.
Take A Deep Breath
Lento people like you give religion a bad name. You wrap yourself in the Bible and then violate the very tenets It teaches. You show true signs of immaturity with your name calling if someone doesn’t march in lockstep with your ramblings. I try and check this board everyday and you, and your aliases, are among the few that have posts removed for inflammatory and defamatory comments but that doesn't seem to register with you. I know I am wasting my time because you cannot reason with an unreasonable person.
Opinions
While the Guardian does have the right to remove certain posts they find offensive, I can see nothing wrong with the posts above that were deleted. This is after all an OPINION section and the Hampton County residents are voicing that opinion. Considering the Decline of the use of Newspapers in their solid paper forms, I would be very wary of ticking off the readers of your newspaper in this area by removing their posts.
Officer Cook does have a lot of support. I know this by keeping my ear to the ground and listening more than running my mouth. He and his wife are very nice people who deserve support through this difficult time.
That being said....It seems wrong that we are upholding double standards in our law enforcement. We all know that there has been others in the department have been in similar situations with civilians being killed while the officer was in their vehicle doing their job yet, I can not remember them being punished in this manner.
I sincerely hope that my thoughts are allowed to stay on the OPINION page as thats what they are....an opinion of a situation that has been handled very badly.
I cannot believe how people
I cannot believe how people are blaming Mike for making Sgt Cook look bad -- I think the long black marks on the road did that -- maybe the other driver did pull out in front of him -- she would not have thought someone would be driving that fast -- at the speed he was going he probably was not even in her view and then all of a sudden he appeared. It was an accident -- I am sure Sgt Cook did not plan to hit the other vehicle and kill someone -- but his judgement to drive that fast in that location was not a good one and we all have to pay the consequences of the mistakes we make. Maybe he just needs to admit that he was driving too fast at the time and apologize to everyone. After working for the Guardian for about 6 years I am sure that if Mike was such a bad reporter he would never have become the editor. I do not think the information that is being posted about Sgt. Cook having to be fired or the Cheif would lose his job was in the reports that Mike was presented -- that is considered hearsay -- from what I see that was a threat to the Cheif and a completely different subject. So what if the car he was driving had electrical problems -- and maybe the speed recorded was affected -- the physical evidence -- the black marks on the road, the damage from the impact, etc --shows he was driving too fast. And besides why would he chance driving that fast in a car that had so many problems -- if there were electrical type problems it would have made that car dangerous to begin with since so many features on the car depend on the electronic/computer system. Actually none of that matters now though because there is a man dead -- losing a job is nothing compared to losing a life. I do not know Sgt. Cook and I hope he can recover from this situation as I am sure he has learned from his bad choice as many of us learn things the hard way. It is not Mikes fault for reporting things the way they are presented in reports. I do believe that Mike deserves andapology from those who have put him down and if the reports he relied on are wrong or incomplete then Sgt. Cook can call a press conference and address those issues.
Two Sides
It is sad that one person lost their life and now another one has lost their livelihood over a preventable accident. I have read all of the comment involving the bias of the paper, the placing of blame. Let's take a moment to look at the situation and the mistakes that led to tithe accident. The civilian pulled out in front of an emergency vehicle, the emergency vehicle was traveling to fast for the roadway it was on and the result was that a citizen lost his life. There is blame on both parties which is why Duffy Stone is taking such a long time in making a decision. It was a tragic and preventable loss of life. Should Sgt. Cook loose his job with HPD? Yes he should have because he made a terrible judgment to drive at a high rate of speed on that section of highway. I know Sgt. Cook personally and agree with everyone that he did a terrific job while with VPD and HPD. Those great things should be taken into account when deciding criminal charges not employment.
As for the Chief of Police and the Town Council, the citizens of Hampton will wake up on day and see that the world has passed them by. Keep electing these people and the youth of the town and county will continue to leave. Until the good old boy network is broken up, there is no hope that the Chief, the Mayor or County Council will be held accountable for anything that happens under their watch.
SCguy is correct
You are totally correct SCguy. Maybe now people will wake up and smell the roses. That's one of the reasons why myself and so many others left. We are not going to sit around and let this happen to us. We saw our parents and grandparents go though it. The good old boys are only going to let things like this, go so far into the news. Let something like that happen, where I am at, every paper in a 300 mile radius and CNN will cover the story. What's going to happen is, this story will run it's course and everything will be the same old hampton again. I ask this question in one of my other postings, how far are "YOU ALL" willing to go for your words to be heard? They key words are, "YOU ALL"
horses mouth
theres an old saying its best to hear it from the horses mouth instead, well yall know what im saying. there is indeed two victims in all of this Mr.cook, may God rest him and me. that day was a changing point in my life. to all of you blaming this one and that one the fact remains that this could have happened to anyone of you. i truely dont remember what happened and im not pointing fingers on anyone. I WAS DOING MY JOB. i got the call to go by cell and for some of you who think they know what happened, well you dont. i have contacted mr. dewitt today and i have no anger directed at him. he is only doing his job. you can only report what you know. i live with this everyday of my life but i feel i did nothing wrong. if i pulled out in front of them trust me i would have resigned a long time ago. ive had to keep my mouth shut because of all the circus this has caused. i ask all of you to stop all of this madness this has caused. i also ask mr. stone to do his job whatever the out come may be. to the family of Mr. Cook i am sorry for what has been taken from yall every day of my life and if i could have done anything different i would have. i served my communty with honor and respect for all people. i left Orangeburg to come home and work in my hometown. it was a dream of mine to work here when i rode with blue when i was a young man wanting to get into law enforcement. i come from hard working people that have lived here all our lives. if i wrote you a ticket, or arrested you and this is the way yall want to get back at me then that only shows what kind of person you are. to my fellow officers at HPD and to my partners around the county i love you all and keep on doing what you all do best. i will get another job in this business i love so much. i never meant to hurt no one, but this innocent mans life was not taken by my doing. she pulled out in front of me. i want people to leave my family alone. if you want to attack anyone attack me not them. to my former chief there is no hard feelings. i have the utmost respect for you and the hard job that you have. i would not want what you go through to keep all of us going. after all this is an election year and i truely feel that was the motivator that costed me my job. to scguy if you do know me then call me and i want you to tell me why this was my fault. trust me people there is alot more to the story and it will all come out. i really dont feel like i will be hired in this county because of all the negativity this has brought. before you pass judgement on me just ask yourself, if someone pulled out in front of you are you at fault. then you say cook you should not have been going that fast. my answer is all i was told get over there he is in the house. if it was your husband or wife beating you would you want law enforcement to take there sweet time, or stop the violence. this is all i will say about this. i have a scar on my forehead and a scar on my soul that reminds me everyday of what i cannot remember. i ask all of you once again to stop all of this bickering and madness on this computer. if most of yall knew the person behind the uniform this madness would not have so gotten out of control. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
My Hero
I am writing after my husband commented because I dont want him to feel alone in this battle. It takes two to make a marriage and careers work and without each other we wouldnt have gotten this far. I would like to say we have been together 19 years and in those years he has never done anything to harm anyone. He is a well respected man by me, his peers, and his superiors. I appreciate all the comments that support my husband and myself. I have never cried so much in my life until after this wreck. I was standing at the courthouse when it happened and ran down Hwy 278 not knowing what I was running into. That feeling stays with me everyday and when the EMS worker let me in the ambulance all he kept saying was how is the other people, are they okay, hows my car, wheres my wife? Once again, he was worried about someone else before himself. His injuries were less than minor. He has a 6inch scar that proves it everyday on his forehead, and a leg that was healed from after a long fight. He hadnt run, rode a bike, wrestled with our nephews, or kneel down since 2005 until his surgery last year in Feb 09 which ended up being a sucess. I was so happy, he was happy that he could run again. Now we are having to battle fixing it again due to injury from the dash. I watch my husband sleep just about every night. My coworkers tell me everyday you gotta get some rest. Since this wreck I am scared to go to sleep for to many hours and something happen. He has been dealing with nightmares, seizures, insomina, and until now he slept like a baby. He has never taken prescription drugs other than medicine for joint pain. I worked in the medical field for 6years and they have taken Jeffery and just tried him on all different types of medicine, some work, some failed. Our Christmas was broken up because of the last medication he was on. I have supported my husband through his law enforcement career from day one. He came home one day and said Baby I want to be a Deputy Sheriff; I replied okay if that is what you want I will support your decision. He started out in the Jail, then went to Ehrhardt where he got certified and ended up being acting Chief for 8 months until a new Chief was hired, then went to ODPS where in had the best of both worlds.(fire and police) As Chief in Ehrhardt he got a reserve program started, he got grants for the department, he upgraded Ehrhardt by taking the time to fill out the grants to help this town out for the future. He worked in Oburg for 5years and regretable left to come back to his hometown for his family, and community to help clean up this town as we watched our nephews, and neice grow up. He wanted to help contribute to make Hampton a safer place to live. In Oburg he learned alot, and was the FTO officers there and Fire Training Officer and it would not have hurt a thing for Jeffery to bring new ideas from an accredited agencies but they just brushed it off and kept telling him this isnt the City. No its not but If someone wants to help another person learn and expand their ideas then why not go for it. The more people learn the better they become. This is the reason I call him my hero. He faught his way to work in the best department in the state then in return said okay my hometown needs me to help them get this great information that I have received from DPS. He started out back in Varnville and the Chief sent him to instructor classes which Jeffery will forever be greatful because he loves to teach. Then working at HPD he became the training officer and he was so HAPPY. I tell him all the time he should have been a teacher at the Academy. I have fought this fight with my husband and I have cried just about every night watching him sleep and have these horrible nightmares about this wreck. His doctor said this was normal and I couldnt even imagine each night how scared he was to go to sleep. When we collected his items from his car I found a picture of his Grandmother and him in his incident clip board, and I thought to myself; this is why he is alive today. She told him when he became a cop and graduated that as long as he wore his uniform and performed Gods work he would never die in his uniform. Me and his best friend found out from a friend that Mr Cook had passed on and we decided that since we were the closet people to him that we needed to be the one to tell him while he was at MUSC because of the head trauma. To our regrets of telling him he was devasted and wanted to know who he was, his family, and what happened. We had no more words for him because we didnt know. As I drove my husband home in our car he was so scared of every little bump, every car that passed us; so I decided to slow down and take our time coming home. I could tell it would take time to get him back under a wheel of a car. Our doctor then recommended to Jeffery to drive some, maybe even get a friend and go fishing. (Anything to get his mind away). The moment we rode by the accident scene he had an anxiety attack so I felt he didnt need to come back to Hampton that week. Readers, citizens, friends, family, please understand if my husband could have prevented this he would have. I am thankful his Chief gave him the option to resign therefore his career of 14 years would not have been for nothing. The pictures I have of my husband several days after the wreck are horrible. I have not shown them to noone but friends and family because he doesnt like people to worry about him. He is a self made man, strong willed, christian, and honest. I know you may say I am biasis because he is my spouse and yes I am because his strength and faith is very strong and if you knew him on a personal level then you shoudl be thankful he had the chance to be in your life for that moment. I have had several people come to my office and discuss the driver of the vehicle about her way of life. I have no comment but I hope they are all untrue because if they are true then she needs to seek some help and get God in her life. We appreciate the support and prayers they will never be forgotten. I just wish HPD would have been more supportive toward an officer that worked very hard for them but I guess they have their reasons just as everyone else does on how they handled this situation. I have six people that work under me and my door and phone is always open to them. I firmly believe in the open door policy in the workplace. If you cannot trust your Boss then who can you trust or confide in when needed to. I could go on and on about my husband and his accomplishments but I would be here all night. If anyone has any questions, concerns, or comments to us please dont hesitate to call. We will be fine, and I have asked my husband to get his leg fixed AGAIN then heal, then go back into lawenforcement. I would also like to say to his ex coworkers, and Chief he liked working within your department and I hope he brought knowledge and honor to yall. Good Luck everyone and keep prayers comin to us without them our home would fall apart.
Thank you
Officer Cook thank you for having the courage to come on this board to face your attackers and supporters. I have no doubt that you are a very good police officer but even though you feel you did nothing wrong that day, I still feel your momentary lack of judgment was a contributible factor to what happened. And I am not saying the other driver did not contribute to the accident as well. No doubt the whole event has been a nightmare for all involved. Hopefully the healing can begin. I agree with you that there has been too much nastiness on this board. It is one thing to disagree, but some of the comments by both sides make the hurt even worse.
My heart goes out
You and your wife has really said alot here. I appreciate your inputs and my heart goes out to you two everyday. Stay Strong! God Speed!
My brother in law- my back bone
So people get on here and post their comments about our family's situation as if they know exactly what's going on. I think it's pretty sick myself. This isn't a "gossip game" as it has been made to be. This is OUR LIFE!!!!! People in Hampton County get so rapped up in the gossip and the "excitement" they don't stop and realize who it is effecting or hurting. I am very proud to say that my family is one of the strongest families aorund this town. Me and my three sisters and my two brother in laws have stuck together our entire life because that's all we have ever had is one another. I will be derned if you are going to push us in a corner and expect us not to come out fighting. It's not in our blood people. I get so disgusted every time I read these comments or I hear people gossiping about the wreck. My brother in law, Jeffery (Sgt. Cook) is one of the best police officers I have ever seen or heard of. He will risk his OWN life to save someone's else's. Jeffery was very proud to be a police officer and helping people. I have been there with him and Shelley as they have gone through this tragedy. Jeffery has cried and hurt time and time again over this. The way he was being treated afterwards and the things people was saying just makes me sick to my stomach. My brother would never hurt anyone on purpose. He is not that type of person. This is not fair and I do not agree with this decison at all. He has been a police officer for 14 years and just like that you people want to take that from him. Why??? He has been treated terrible by certain people and he doesn't deserve that. Yes, this was a terrible accident and my heart goes out to Mr. Cook's family. Things will get better and my family will get through this. I just hope that for the people put there that "think" they know what happened or "think" they are right about there own opinion will be able to live with themselves. Maybe they should try walking in our shoes for a day or two! For the people who have our back and have posted supportive comments... thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you all and God bless our family. Jeffery and Shelley you both are my rock... yall always have been. I love you and together... we will make it!!
It all boils down to this
In reference to the whole Officer Cook incident and everyone involved in bashing him on this blog, I have one question and one question only. Would you want to be treated this way? Treat others the same way you want to be treated. HERE ENDETH THE LESSON!!!

HMM..
How would you consider this a preventable accident? Certainly you should know that when a vehicle pulls out in front of another moving vehicle it is unpredictable. No I do not agree that Sgt Cook should have been forced to resign because he was following a direct order from his major. If you say this about Cook then why is McAlhaney still in his position when he was ordered to stand down and stop chasing.? I do agree with you on the council and the youth of this town. Things will not change unless our VOTERS get them out of there. It shouldnt be a family thing. This is where the problem lies. Cook God bless you are your family. Keep the Faith!
Why preventable
To clarify, the reasons behind the comment that said the accident was preventable is that as a police officer there is a duty to make a judgement concerning your actions no matter what the call or who demanded that you step it up. There is nothing worse for a protector of the community than the tragic loss of an innocent life. There is no question that Jeffery Cook was a great asset to the Town of Hampton community and I wish him nothing but the best. No matter what anyone thinks, Sgt Cook and his family has suffered more than anyone will ever know. My comments are not meant to place blame on anyone. There has been enough speculation about this terrible accident and it is now time to allow both families to try and find a way to heal. Finally, Jeffery I do hope that you do continue your career in Law Enforcement and it would be great to see you as the Chief of Police. God be with you and your family.......
I agree, enough is enough
I agree with the writer of a previous post that enough is enough. It is time to stop pointing fingers, whispering behind backs, and writing unkind post. Some blame the policeman and some blame the other driver. Have you pulled out on hwy 278 lately where that unfortunate accident happened? Try it sometimes. When you stop at the stop sign you can see that the traffic light is red or green. When cars are stopped for the red light in the right hand lane going towards the court house, the view of any oncoming traffic is blocked. If the view from the left is clear, I would probably do exactly what the other driver did, pull out to make that left hand turn or cross all four lanes as though togo to Nix Florist. Most drivers involved in an accident that causes a death are charged with vehicular homicide. The fact that Sgt. Cook was not shows that by findings of the law, he contributed to the accident but was not totally responsible. Please, lets put this story to rest and give those involved in the accident some peace.
I Agree
Thanks for agreeing with us. These are our opinions and nothing more. If we cant converse on her then how can we get our opinions heard. We want because it takes alot to move this politic issue in Hampton being that everyone is kin in the higher ups. Yes Officer Cook is a great officer and he will make his mark again one day in Hampton.
You can also voice your opinion
Excuse me but you can also voice your opinion by writing a letter to the editor of the newspaper and signing your name to it.
Looks to me like........
